What to do with abandoned iguana.
Today I caught an iguana at my workplace. No, I don't live in the tropics, I live in UT.
I first saw it Friday, called animal control, and watched them botch the capture, resulting in 1 iguana very high in a tree. The AC officer was unwilling to do anything else, but said she'd come back to check on it. ;Q
Today (monday morning) I found him lower in the tree and managed to catch him. DETAILS HERE He looks like he's had a rough go lately, and it's been getting cold enough at nights he wouldn't have lasted much longer outside.
So, what should I do with him now? I can take care of him in the short term but I can't really keep him forever. Mostly I was worried about him dying from the cold. The local animal shelter doesn't have reptile facilities. I don't know of any local reptile rescue operations.
What to do?

Place an ad in the lost & found section of the local papers, place an ad in the regular pets section if no owner comes foward saying "Iguana: for sale cheap" (you'll have to pay for this add and if you advertise giving him away all kinds of weirdos will come out of the woodwork so set a price of like $50 then when you find him a home you can just give him away, call the local radio stations and ask them to air your iguana story, local TV stations too... Put up fliers in the area, etc.
He might not be abandoned. He could have escaped from his home.
Start a thread in your state club here offering free iguana.
Somebody will want him...it may just take a little bit of time.

Turtlehomes is a reptile rescue and adoption service.
It will cost you nothing and the adopter assumes the cost of getting the animal from you to them.
The primary focus is turtles but they will attempt to find homes for any reptile.
I have used them in the past to help me find homes for the excess of eastern box turtles that were being born in my outdoor enclosure.

Good luck.
Unfortunately, iguanas are often discarded after they get big. Owner loses interest, animal becomes less friendly than they wanted, and the decide to get rid of it. A friend of mine owns a reptile store, every singe day he gets at least one call from somebody trying to give away a large iguana; he won't take them unless they give it away with a cage (so he can give away the whole unit to a do-gooder)
Anybody looking to adopt a large iguana has their pick, so the ones with: regenerated tails, curved backs, missing toes, bad attitudes. beat up noses, etc; don't have nearly as good a chance of being adopted.

true.
I think the chances someone 'lost' him are slim. I work in an office condo complex between two very busy roads. there isn't any residential houses nearby. The lot to the north is vacant, with a dirt road through it. Very easy for someone to drive through, drop the unwanted critter off, and continue on their way. :(
He's resting easy for now though, enjoying a lunch of collard greens.

Put up fliers with the local vets advertising a free iguana and the story of how you found him.
People who abandon animals are one of the lowest forms of life there is :(
