Just finished James Patterson's "Swimsuit". WOW! The bloodiest, most psyco killer ever. The pages will fly by....
Tonight I start the latest Jack Reacher book by Lee Child, The Affair. From what I understand this is a prequal that goes back and tells of how Reacher got started. Can't wait to get into it.
A fairly new-to-me author is Nelson Demille. He is a terrific story teller and I have already read several of his John Corey books. I noticed the other day while perusing the NetFlix movies that one of his books was made into a movie. The movie got mixed reviews. Some loved it and some hated it. The title is "Word "Of Honor"
Anyway I found the book and will read it after I finish "The Affair" and then see the movie and decide for myself. Report to follow..........

I apologize for not making that clearer. You are right that it is a prequal to all of the Jack Reacher books. It starts with his last assignment while he is still in the Army and does tell "how Reacher got started." It is very good!!

Jack, The General's Daughter was also a Demille book that was made into a movie. If you haven't already discovered it, The Lion's Game is my favorite book by him. As for me, I recently read Full Black, and Rawle's book Survivors. Both were great reads. I have inherited the Nook from my wife, so I have been reading a minimum of 2-3 books per week. Its really cutting into my forum time! I am halfway into a freebie book from BN right now that is so good that I had to get on here and post to let everyone know. It is Desperate Times. If you enjoy books like Patriots, and One Second After, you will really enjoy this book. I am not a particularly fast reader, but I have read over 400 pages already today. It is one of the best books I have read in a long time and it was FREE! I really wasn't behind the electronic book thing until I tried it. Now I love it. I buy the books that I feel I must read, but they have like 16,000 pages of books on bn.com that are free. It takes a while to weed through and find them, but there are lots of great books.

Yessir! That was one powerful movie. I hadn't got on to Demille yet by the time I saw it but even though I don't usually like to read the book after I've seen the movie I may do it in this case. I will start Word Of Honor tonight.
Last night I finished The Affair, the latest Jack Reacher book by Lee Child. His writing is very different than it was in Killing Floor, his first. In The Affair he only had a couple of fights and only killed a few people. In the early stages of his books Reacher was beating up/shooting guys on every page. He still takes care of bidness in his own inimitable way just not as frequently.
But his story telling and plot development skills started out good and have gotten great. To me The Affair is by far his best book. If there is a better action hero writer than Lee Child it's a surprise to me.

Reaper, that is a good one. As a matter of fact, I think that I will be reading all three books in the trilogy again pretty soon.

About half way through reading Word of Honor by Nelson Demille. This book was published way back in 1985 And that was way before John Corey came along as Demille's recurring hero. It, apparently, was also before he honed his craft to the razor edge it is now. It's a good story and I have "learned" (kinda/sorta) how to read his style of that time. Not nearly as good as it is today but still a good book. I still plan on renting the movie from NetFlix when I have finished the book.
It very closely follows the true story of Lt. (James or John?) Calley from the Vietnam era.

I've just finished a French literature class focusing on France's colonial era.
André Gide's L'Immoraliste (The Immoralist)
Pham Van Ky's Freres de Sang (Blood Brothers)
Emmanuel Dongala's Le Feu des Origines (The Fire of Origins)
Linda Lê's Calomnies (Slander)
Leïla Sebbar's La Seine Était Rouge (The Seine Was Red)
Aimé Césaire's Cahier d'un Retour au Pays Natal (Notebook of a Return to the Native Land)
Marguerite Duras' L'Amant (The Lover)
I hate liberal arts requirements.
ETA: On the bright side, I think only two were >250 pages or so.
Anyway. Enough of all of that Français--I'm reading Isaac Asimov's Prelude to Foundation for myself .

In my never-ending quest to discover new (to me) authors I am now about 1/3 the way through a guy I discovered at the library the other day. He has written many books and won many awards. I wonder if any of y'all have heard of him or read any of his works. I would be very curious to hear what you think of his books because I was very surprised that a writer of his experience still writes like this and I also wonder if he has anyone to edit his writing before it is published.
His name is Stuart Woods and the title of this book is Santa Fe Edge, published in 2010. In his writing technique he employs some most unfortunate features, namely; run-on sentences, convoluted and confusing plot developments, and very shallow almost childish story line with one cleche after another. The story is not without SOME appeal so I will finish this book but I don't think I'll be reading any more of his stuff.
As I mentioned I would like to hear from someone that has read his writing and particularly THIS book.
Thanks....

Very interesting! I actually got to see that boat very close up and personal when it was on display in Galveston but that was many years ago. That boat was build back when boats were built with class and graceful elegance. Not like these fiberglass monsters of today that have no spirit and no heart. I can relate to wood, a natural material, a lot better than I can relate to fiberglass I'll tell you that much........

It is in Cuba rotting away I am told-was truly a thing of beauty from the pics I have seen.
Had two engines -a big gas Chrysler main engine and a much smaller Lycoming trolling engine. "Double screws" Could run on one or the other engine and both if necessary, pretty slick set up for turning on itself when fishing etc...
Built in Brooklyn, NY. Did you know he had a Thompson submachine gun on board to shoot sharks and a Colt Woodsman that he actually shot himself accidentally (2 times ?) with- ricochet while trying to kill a live shark they had boated...nuts!
