A little advice
Keep your original DD-214 in a safe deposit box, and make lots of copies.
You will use this alot for buying a house through the VA.

I have my original in a fireproof safe, a scaned copy on my computer, a copy at my parents house and a certified copy on file at the courthouse, I didn't want to take any chances!! Thanks for the congrats too!

lucky8926, you have done well in preserving your military
records, however please let me describe a most recently passed
piece of legislation here in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Due to the theft of so many identities, it appears that
the courthouse is a plethorea avenue for name grabbers. Those
DD-214s have lotsa of info that could clean your house.

The new law lets veterans who have filed any military records
in the clerk's office of the courthouse, to fill out certain
forms that allow the clerk to destroy those records by shreading
them into bits. Two weeks ago I took advantage of this opportunity,
as I had a bunch of them recorded, DD214s and DD256s. At one
time, and I believe where it all started, was that the recorded
document was a means for survivors to make claim on a veterans
record or the veteran himself to make claim on war bonuses that
a lot of states gave to veterans who applied for state bonus.

My advice, get those courthouse records destroyed and keep all
other records under your own lock and key.

Check your individual state laws. In Washington, you can now file a copy, that only you can ever access. This was a recent change to prevent identity theft.

I got mine in April from the PA Army National Guard, and I was sweating bullets.

I did four years in the USMC out of highschool in 1979, and 4 years ago I joined the PAARNG for a few extra bucks. But I was having conflicts with the Guard and my civilian job (LEO), so they dropped me from having to do the weekend thing, but I was still carried on their roster.

Then I learned my unit was being called up for duty in Iraq, which is where they are now. One day this manila envelope arrived and I thought for sure they contained my marching orders!! ;P

Thankfully it was my Honorable Discharge ;f

Now I've got two, one from the USMC and the other from the Army ;f

I have my original DD-214 from my 9 years in the Navy but I haven't recieved my HD from the IRR yet. If it took you almost 7 months to get yours, i wont start worrying until next April.

what is this IRR? is this something given after you received the Dd214 and/or do you must request it?

thanks, I never had todo IRR due to completeing my 8 yrs active. So is it my understanding by reading the above, that if you discharge before completion of 8years of service and only after your IRR time has expire is when you receive your DD214/215? or do you get it on discharging prior to going to IRR?

If you get a chance let me know. I post this question to other military members that I know locally but all of them are in the same boat as me, they did a full 8 years , thus no IRR.

btw, I received 2 discharges for the 2ea 4yrs terms that I accomplished under the USAF.

if you have'nt already, the V.F.W. then go one extra step and become
a D.A.V. van driver or a volunteer in the VA hospital system. Many
WWII thru current disabled veterans would be absolutely delighted
that you would be there to give them a hand both physically and

I can join the V.F.W.? I didn't do any acitve time. I am however going to check into volunteering at a V.A. hospital. I'm not sure if there are any around me though...

File copies of your DD 214 wiht your local VA office and maybe even with your local court. This way there will be an "official" copy accessible just in case you miss your original (God forbid).

If you need copies of your DD214's; go to google and type in: national personnel records center. I think their # is 314 801- 0800. Another site might be http://vetrecs.archives.gov/. I was in the Navy from 1959-1969[three enlistments] and had to get a dd214 for each enlistment for my state retirement and SS.
