Over Clocking

Do you do it? If so. Whats your specs

Mine
2.6C P4 OC'd to 3.2
CPU voltage 1.575
2 gigs of HyperX Kingston PC4000
9800XT

I am not stressing my machine all that much from this OC.

Nope.
Waste of time.
Although it was a hobby of mine when I could only afford 300Mhz Celeron processors.

Processors are so cheap today that there really is no need to overclock, but to each his own.

I never do.

I prefer to be able to sell my 'gently used' components to raise funds for upgrades.

I could not do that in good faith if I had been running a vid card or proc at its ragged edge for months beforehand. That would be akin to beating a car to death before claiming it was only driven to church on Sundays by my dear old granny to a buyer. Not cool.

Heat kills components, or drastically reduces their lifespan, so I think that NetNinja is right on this one.

If you need more performance, go buy a 3.4GHz P4 or a 6800 Ultra or whatever.

If you take care of your PC from then on and do not overstress the components, you can just sell your slower parts (or assemble them into a PC and sell that) so that you can raise funds for a GeForce 7900 Ultra Half-Life III card, or a Pentium 6 5.5GHz, in a year or two.

Best regards,

FastVFR

Minor Overclock

Tech Talk

Nothing too crazy at the moment. Here in the next couple of months I'll probably save up to buy some nice PC4200 RAM... probably OCZ and probabaly the enhanced latency series. With that I'll be able to go a lot higher with my CPU. I'll just need to grab an aftermarket heatsink and fan (which is already in the works).

The RAM I have currently is awesome, it's just not quite right for my Intel setup. I have 1 GB of Mushkin PC3500 Level II (yes, the BH-5 chips). No longer in production and arguably the best overclocking RAM ever made.

**So if there are any AMD guys out there that want the best RAM you can put in your system I'll be selling mine soon.**

Cool! Nice job. As for it being a waste of time. Or hard on your parts. As long as you are safe about it. Your fine. Heat and voltage kills CPU's. Keep them in the safe range and your golden.

P4 2.4 oc'd to 2.7

X800 Pro oc'd to 500 / 540 with all antialiasing and antistopic filtering maxed out (6X, 16X) and temporal enabled.

I have sucky ram or I would push it a little more :(

If you do oc be sure to upgrade your cooling solutions. I actually run cooler on my cpu and videocard now than when I was running stock

All that trash smashed together in a case, plug in and enjoy. But seriously, I chose all those specific parts so I could overclock that bad mamajama to 4.4ghz. I have two 80mms in the front providing good airflow over the motherboard and out the back through another pair of 80mms. Big old Spreeze 92mm on the chip itself, which should be more than adequit. I've seen this chip run 3.7 stable with just the factory Intel heatsink!

I'll take pics of the proccess and once it's done and post up all the benchmarks. **** should be here next week at the lastest. Wish me luck guys. Corporal Baer signing off!

The video card even has it own cooling fan?

Why not the 800 Pro? Just curious.

I just retired a AMD 166 that I overclocked to 200 MHz because the motherboard did not support a 166 CPU.

I did everything to try to kill that box..no fans, dust etc....

It got to the point that I wanted to see it die, just to see it happen.

To my disappointment, I never killed that box. It is now in a closet waiting to be abused again. I

The box was only used for a firewall and ssh tunnel so it did not get beat on much.

I would be worried if I had to overclock my other 2 systems (AMD 800 MHz and AMD 2.4 GHz). Since the heat difference is much greater the the 166.

A comment about cooling fans on Vid cards. My ATI 9800XT came with a cooling fan on it. I changed it out for a Arctic COoler. Because I am OC'ing it a bit as well.

Frefoo, yea those older cpu's are hard to kill. Just no heat to burn it up.
