Music Bit Rate Q

What speed do you guys burn music on the computer at?

Most of the stuff I've done has been at 64kbps. If you're just listening over a pedestrian set of earphones is there much difference in the quality.

Also, is it just me, or do you loose a lot of base response on the computer. It seems to me like with the same song and same headphones there's less base when played through the computer than through a regular stereo CD player.

192 kbps MP3. Disk space is cheap and I can't stand the low bitrate sound.

128. As you point out, I am just playing back through PC speakers or cheap headphones on an airplane.

I've read that it's the higher frequencies that start to degrade with the lower bit rates.

Personally I rip all my music at 192kbps and above.

Like podwich said, disk space is cheap.

Typically I use a variable bit rate biased towards higher quality. It will give you an overall bitrate somewhere around 128kbps.

128kbps and 44,100hz minimum optimal for low disk space

192kbps and 44,100hz prefered optimal for a compromise, but not much of a compromise as it sounds great

320kbps and 48,000hz optimal for quality

I usually rip using a variable bit rate, with the MINIMUM set at 192. Seems to work well for me.

I rip everything at 192 except for classical. That I rip at 320 for near CD quality.

192kbps. Anything below that and I get fatigued easily.

It's not the bitrate that matters. It's the encoder and the format.
