Verizon DSL and hub/router

I've been sharing our DSL to two comps through an old 10 base hub I had lying around.
This week Verizon did some "maintenance" in our area, and after the DSL came back, only ONE comp works at a time. Only one machine gets a real IP, the other defaults to a private IP. I tried manually setting the IP and gateway on the other, no dice.

Verizon told me to buy a router, from them of course, since the one they sell are the only ones they support.
I'm a little ticked, since it worked with just the hub for a year before they dicked it up!

Do I have any other options to make it work again?

Doubtful. Just pick up a router, you don't have to buy one of theirs. Is your DSL service DHCP or PPPoE?

I don't see any PPPoe anything, and I do see a DHCP server address (on the comp that works), so Im guessing DHCP

Then pick up whatever router you'd like, I have not seen one that has not supported DHCP on the internet side.

When VZ says they only support "their" routers, it only means they have emulators/documentation on the few specific routers they sell; IE they only know how to navigate/setup those few. As soon as they learn you are using a different router they will still try to help you, but the specific tech you have on the phone may not know what the screens look like; if they cannot get you up and running using your router, they can only get you up with a single PC. Once they've done that, they've 'proved' its not an issue with their network, but a settings/configuration issue on your "unsupported" equipment.

I would also like help with this problem. When you use the term "router" do you mean a device that works on the 3rd layer of the OSI model or are you refering to a "hub" that works on the 2nd layer od the OSI model? I am using a new 10 port Cisco Hub and no matter what I try I can only get one computer to work at a time. Both computers are using Win XP Pro.

Thanks...

Broadband router. It connects the cable/dsl modem and is a switch for an inside network.

Broadband Router Guide for the home and small office

Note: Please look for the words "Stateful packet inspection" or SPI in there as well as broadband router. This gives you a firewall as well. It is well worth the about $10 difference in price.
