Radio for listening to truckers warnings...

I recently learned that truckers radio each other about speed traps. Now I'd like a radio (transmittable or maybe just a scanner) that I can hear the warnings in my vehicle as well.

I'd like something that doesn't require any wiring or whips. Just a portable/handheld.

Any info would be helpful.

Get a shortwave receiver that is capable of receiving 27185 Mhz. That's CB channel 19, the usual traffic channel.

Or you could just get a CB and listen to channel 19.

Get the cheapest CB you can find & a mag mount antenna. Wal-Mart has CB's for less than 50 bucks. If all you want to do is listen this will work fine. Should you decide to talk you will need to match the antenna to the radio. DO NOT key the mic if you haven't matched the antenna.

Check garage sales for cheap CBs & antennas. Actually I usually find the CB but no antenna there. Radio shack has some inexpensive antennas.

For a shortwave receiver (because there's so much more to listen to than truckers yammering), I would recommend a wideband receiver with a digital tuner such as a Grundig Yachtboy. They go for under $150 & are worth every penny.

The garage sale suggestion is a very good one. I picked up a little citizens band radio and a mag mount antenna for five bucks. The only things I needed to do were replace the inline fuse in the radio and adjust the antenna for my vehicle with an SWR meter.

By the way, remember that if you use a mag mount antenna, your vehicle is the ground plane. So, if you move from vehicle to vehicle with the setup, be sure to check the standing wave ratio of your antenna at the new vehicle to make sure of a good match.

Go into your local truckstop and check out the handheld models. I'm sure you could pick one up for $30 to $40 bucks brand new. It's like a CB walkie talkie. Truckers use channel 19. Channel 9 is typically for emergencies or trying to get ahold of LEO. I'm not sure how often LEO monitors channel 19 or 9 though.

Hey emt1581,

Pay for the shipping and I'll send you a hand held 40 ch cb portable for free. It's a Cobra and I don't need it. It think we bought it to talk to car to car with my parents on a vacation a few years back. It's nice and works fine and not too big. It's a walkie talkie type with digital display.

And some cops will give false ones...

25 or so years ago I was returning from some training in VA headed North on I-81. Our driver was doing like 90 in a 55 and we got a "Bear Report" that Smokey was sitting at the 314 mile marker...about 30 seconds later we got tagged at the 307...we're not sure it was the cops that threw out the bogus report but traffic was real light at that time and nobody else on the CB refuted it...so, ya never know...

Also, EMT1581, you will prolly get sick of it, I got my first CB just to listen to truckers, but all it is is a bunch of yellin, cussin, and talkin for miles over the top of each other with illegal equipment, echoes and squealing noises, etc. Not saying all CBers are like this, but thats all I can hear when I am on the interstate here. And dont ever try and cuss them back or anything, I know of a few people who have been followed, and when the stopped at a gas station, had the crap beat out of them by some trucker who took offense. Not trying to discourage you, I hope you enjoy it, just be polite with it and keep radio in any form civil.

That's a big 10-4 good buddy. On the blue language anyway.

I used to listen to the SW receiver in the car to channel 19 while traveling. Too much (*$#&@^*@!(*$#! I'd rather take my chances.

I used to have a CB in the ham shack (actually I widebanded an Icom 746) & would occasionally attempt to have a civil conversation on it, and very occasionally succeed.

One time a young woman was cussing up a storm at presumably her boyfriend or husband bcs her car wouldn't start in a parking lot and it was snowing and he was trying to coach her through some basic things to try which of course she didn't want to do. So between streaks of vulgarity I said, "I love it when you talk dirty."

She paused for a bit and said, "Well you better keep (*$#%&$#* listening because you're going to #@(*%#& hear some more!"

But actually she quite profanizing at that point.

Of course, on the other hand...

Not all truckers even keep they're CB's operational.

For example, I know... uh... "this guy", who got assigned a different truck last week when he came back to work from time off, and my, uh... "his" CB is still sitting on the far corner of the dash, wires hanging down almost to the floor board. The Ham Shack

What you could do on top of having a CB radio, is to pick up a scanner radio. Realistic, Bearcat, Regency, etc. all have scanner radios for varying prices. Most of them cover 25-1300 mHz. (excluding cellular). They will not only pick up the CB channels (11 meters) but also cover Low to Very High Ham Frequencies, which include most channels that the local Police use in any given city. They'll even cover the trunked 800 channels Police Agencies are moving to.

Now you won't be able to converse with other truckers or motorists, but if you buy a Radio Shack/Realistic or Betty Bearcat Scanner directory, they cover all the Police/Fire/Emergency/and Business traffic in each town and city. Most of them today are programmable and you can switch frequencies in a heartbeat or scan any amount of channels at one time.

As an Owner/Op I myself keep the CB off most of the times, the closer you get to a metro area, the more BS is on it.. It is miles from what it used to be.. I keep a 2m in the truck, but it is usally very quiet. Although many "snowbirds" that travel from the north to Fla and back semi-annually are Ham-Ops, and I catch them on 2m many times.

Listen, use the CB as one of your tools to avoid speed traps, but after many years of driving, I have found that using your eyes is the best.. What most of us "Truckers" do that keep the CB's off, is read the traffic about a mile in front of us, people tapping their brakes, is usually a good reason to slow down.. I tend not to use the "rabbit" method.. In PA, if they catch you by air, they will pull a bunch over at a time, if you are following someone else driving 80+ you are going down with him.. On 78 in our area, the PSP have been shooting from bridges and having 3 or 4 cars a few miles up pulling everyone over.. It is not unusual to see 6 or 7 cars on the side of the road between 3 cops..

What I do, and my last speeding tic was 17-years ago...

An excellent Radar detector, I used to use an Escort 8500, I no longer carry a "bird-dog"

CB, tho not much, just every so often. It is usually a VG way to keep an eye out, but if a trucker sees a 4-wheeler flying past him driving like an idiot weaving in and out, they will generally give out false reports to get the 4-wheeler slowed down.. Also MANY cops have CB's in their units, and give out their own false reports to catch speeders..

Observe the traffic in front of you, and never be the one leading the pack.. This is what I use 90% of the time, and it is near perfect. I make sure cars that need to be out front flying down the road, get thier way, they will get the awards, and you get to drive right by them.

I tend travel about 5 to 9 mph over the speed limit and I stay out of the left lane as much as possible, although I will not pass on the right if I can help it.. Trucks have a WAY large blind spot on the right, and most of the time never see the car coming around the right... That is why, from time to time you will see a rig run a car off of the road, you could hide another rig in my rightside blind spots, so your 4-wheeler is much easier to hide there.

These are the rules I follow, wether I am driving my PU, MC or big-rig..

Thanks for the reply Ouki, btw, where in the LV are ya? Maybe we can get together and plink sometime. We're trying to organize a shoot in the LV in the PA forum now.

Anyways, what you say does make sense. I absolutely HATE the cocky little civic or thug mobile drivers that feel it's neccessary to jump into your trunk to show you they can go fast. Almost been nailed twice by two that came out of no where by the Fullerton underpass and by the 191 exit.

I've seen what you're talking about MULTIPLE times with the 4 and 5 car speed traps. Never been nailed by one but it's like DAMN someone's hurtin for business. Then 10 minutes later when they're gone it's back to business as usual, so really other than the ones nabbed, what impact did it have?

I'm curious how long it takes to nail a speeder? That is, how long does the average trooper have to sit there before he/she nails someone at a high enough speed to stop? Before I share my assumption, I'm curious what you all think...how long does it take??

Also, I've been giving great thought to it, and I'm usually good at finding loopholes or little tricks to get around certain..."hindrances" and so far I've got nothing in terms of beating a speed trap...

We've heard how the CB's are basically baited by cops or covered with chatter. The radar detectors go off AFTER you've been nailed. And eyes only work if you can slow down fast enough to see the front of the car and slow down to around legal speed by the time you hit their radar gun (.5 sec).

It's left me feeling really frustrated.:(

Something else, what's with the high speed limits in other states and PA's lack thereof? Is it true other areas of equal curves and environments have 75 and 85 limits???

Not to be a smartbutt, but, why not just.... not speed? Now dont get me wrong I do speed, everyone does, but the way I see it, if you speed, and get caught, you cant whine about it. You were in the wrong and you go caught, simple as that. That being said, radar detectors are crap for the most part, they may work well on the interstate where they are left emmitting a signal, but in cities and out in the county, most are paused until they click them on ya, and then all your detector is saying is "you just got caught". ALot of states are now running Lidar (laser). Which is more pinpoint than radar, and much harder to detect with a laser detector. Either way, be civil with your radio of any service, and be safe however you drive.

The only time I really need/want to use my CB radio is when I'm driving 'cross country on vacation with the family. The language (not all) is so full of profanity, I can't stand to even turn it on. Moreover, the truckers are so bored, 99% of the time, all they transmit is mindless jibber-jabber.

I wish there was just a channel dedicated to nothing but weather and traffic conditions 24/7. Maybe I need some sort of scanner, however I'm pretty ignorant on the subject.

Unforch, there isn't one, at least not on the conventional airwaves. Maybe satellite radio has such a thing, but I've not heard of them having a traffic channel dedicated to a specific area.

There are 24/7 weather channels, in fact some car radios have the freqs built into them but I've not found them very useful - too "general," e.g., "showers overnight in the great lakes region..." and often obsolete, i.e., they're broadcasting yesterday's forecast.

Mobile scanner use laws vary by state but in general you can't just use a scanner in your car. You usually need some kind of permit or a ham radio license. I haven't found the scanner useful in monitoring where enforcement will be anyway. It is useful for knowing what's going on when traffic's backed up.

I know this is a dead topic but did you find a CB yet? Like someone else said I just got some WallyWorld one for cheap and an antenna. It took 30 minutes to install it how I liked it and now I can turn on 19 when on the interstate. There's occasional cussing but the band is generally pretty quiet. When you get on the interstate just ask "Can I get a bear report heading (direction) on I-(number) from exit (number.)" You should get some polite replies. Sometimes cops will throw out false information, I've had that before. And I'm sure they will listen also. Cheers.

When I'm on the interstate--other than driving to Tampa/Orlando, I ALWAYS monitor 19, It's saved me numerous times.
