Funny series

Someone was talking about a humorous series of books about backpacking or hitchhiking in America. I searched but can't find them and as for my deskside notebook......................I can't even find it.
If anyone knows what I'm talking about, could I get the names please?

"Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy", perhaps?

I'm not sure if that's a series or just a single book, however.

A Walk in the Woods

Bill Bryson is a travel/humour writer who wrote A Walk in the Woods about traveling the Appalachian trail with an old high school buddy. Bryson is a very humorous writer and has several books, .In a Sunburned Counrty is real good.

Not sure what's going on here, but if you're looking for a "travelling across America" series, THE HITCHHIKER'S...is not it. It is science fiction, and doesn't take place in America, not even on Earth, except it starts in England, I think. BTW, I enjoyed it, but didn't like the movie.
