Wife's pistol time has come

She's been interested for years, but I made a mistake. I've been shooting with her using my G23s. She likes it, but doesn't handle it well. My mistake - I continued to tell her she would get used to it if she just kept shooting.

But it finally dawned on me - it just doesn't fit her hand. Of course, she has been saying that for years, but it finally dawned on me. The double stack, boxy grip is too big around.

So, if a G23 is too big for her hand, but she wants a .40 S&W semi that won't kick her too hard, what are the options? What do some of you gals out there use that don't do Glocks?

Thanks in advance!

You may want to see if you can rent or borrow a Sig P239. It is a slimmer single stack pistol that is available in .40. You can also change the trigger to a short trigger if it makes it easier for her. I have one in 9mm, it was my first handgun. It fits my hands wery well, and mine are a little on the small side.

Another thought...if she really likes the Glock but the .40 is kicking too hard, why not have her try a Glock 19? I also have one, and love it. My duty weapon is a Glock 22, and if I shoot it some, then shoot one of the 9mm Glocks, my hands just go "Ahhhhhhhh " She will probably find it easier to hang onto than the 23. If the grip is still an issue, you can look into grip reduction, and this will still allow her to have a Glock if that is what she really wants.

Please do not consider the .40. Please do her the favor of getting the 9mm in whatever choice. More new shooters are hampered by the .40 than I can tell you about. Gun handling skills and marksmanship come first. Gun selection and caliber are secondary.
Now, I am not saying she cannot handle the .40, just that it will be MUCH easier for her to learn.
The 239, and Kahr are both top picks for single stack guns.

Move her up to a 1911 in .45acp. Much thinner profile, easier to conceal, and customizable to her exact preferences. The longer the slide, the easier to rack & lower perceived recoil too.
--1911's are my preferred carry pistol.

GLOCK 19....

....just don't tell her they are the same physical size. Let her see that it takes 9mm rounds first, then let her handle it.

Look at a Kahr K9. It will fit her smaller hands well and the K9 is all steel so it has a very light recoil.

I have a G19 and I've got pretty small hands (and a pretty small everything else as well as that's usually how these things go). I tried a 26 as well before I bought and the 19 didn't jump around as badly as the 26 did on me.

Yeah, that's a good suggestion, treat her like an idiot. ;Q

How about a Glock 36? Not a 40, it's a single stack 45acp. Slimmer than the double-stacks, very nice, same everything else as the gun she's been using. I really enjoy the G36.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Well we want to a couple of ranges and rented a few different guns. (Man, I love dropping $10 per gun and $10 for a box of ammo about 8 times in one day.:( )

Anyway, it ended up her favorite was S&W 642 revolver. It fits her hand better. If is small enough to conceal easily on her body rather then in a purse. The .38 Special doesn't "rock her world", so give the lady what she wants.

It all ended up okay! She's happy and I'm happy. :ladiesmn:

wife's gun

i'm glad you found something that she liked and felt good to her..
my hands are small to med. i have a taraus mil. .40.
i have had no trouble with it what so ever. it's very accurate and doesn't kick that bad. i also have a mil. pro .45 that is just as wicked. i just bought a g22 that i am learning to hold and shoot. it's a bit big but the accuracy will blow your mind. i hope your family stays safe and happy.

Good job letting her pick out what she likes best. If you are happy and she is happy that's all that matters.

I may have to get me one of those myself someday.

Yes, and that would ruin my self esteem.
