Is it a good idea to let XP do "automatic update"?

It depends. I think that MSFT comes out with updates once a month (the 2nd Tuesday of each month) unless they have some really screwed up stuff come up, If you just check for updates on that Wednesday, you’ll be OK.

Update: If you are going to use Automatic Updates to makes sure to tell it that you only want it to download the updates for you and let you install them. I think that Windows will automatically restart your PC if you allow it to download and install the updates without your intervention.

Almost forgot....Can I install all updates and do one reboot or do I need to reboot after each update that calls for it?

They claim you can do them with one restart but that doesn't always work right.It's best when installing an update that requires an update to install it alone and restart after each one.Don't clean up you drive when installing updates or programs.Restart first then you can clean up the drive and registry.After everything installed run Ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com or Disk Cleanup then run Disk Defragmenter,but not before you restart.
