I have used them quite successfully where either fast acquisition or low light is an issue. There are many reticules available now but I favour ones with only a small illuminated part of the reticule, either a small dot in the centre of the cross hairs or a small illuminated cross hair. I don't like the type where the entire reticule, or all the mil-dot reference points are illuminated as I find they obscure too much of the target.
