Good/Favorite Weapons Stories

Doesn't nessecarily have to be combat related, but your favorite weapon(s) from big to little that you were able to shoot with during your time in the Corps.

Mine will always be the .50 Cal. No feeling like it in the world. I did enjoy the Beretta as they just transitioned over in my unit.

Didn't get to fire a lot, but what I did I enjoyed.

I was partial to the M249 SAW when it worked. Got to fire the CAR-15 on full auto and was impresed, plus a couple of Trench guns here and there that just tore ***** up.

The M40

Just fun stuff...

1980 - OCS. Three of us 2nd Lts. had just put on a live fire demo for a group of Midshipmen who get to play 'Marine' during their summer break. An enlisted man comes up to us (we each were gun nuts then) and says, "I have a couple of hundred M40 grenades that I don't want to take back, HE and Bouncing Betty's....wanna shoot them off?"

Oh yea.

The weapons I knew...

Pistol: .45 1911A1, always dependable, felt like crying the day we took on the Beretta. Never got enough ammo to shoot-- only for requal. Wore the SS badge once, expert the rest of the time. Only qual'ed once with the Beretta, just never liked it.

Rifle: M16A1 was the only one I fired. By the time the M16A2 came along, I was not going to the rifle range anymore. A pity-- the heavier barrel made the A2 a much better weapon. The sights were easier to adjust, too.

106 mm recoiless rifle: great 1950s era weapon we used until around 1977-78, but was way obsolete against armor. Fun to shoot both the main gun and the .50 cal spotting rifle. Replaced by the Dragon, a POS.

M79 grenade launcher: a few of these left in the armory in the mid-late 1970s. Great for marking targets for air. Fun to shoot-- more fun than the M203 that replaced it.

Bad weapons' memories-- humping the 81 mm mortar bipod, the tube, or the M60 machine gun on hikes!

Best weapons' memory-- going to the rifle range for annual requal as a unit. Everyone competed against one another. Nobody wanted to be low shooter when you changed stages, because you would have to carry the scoreboard back. Working the butts was part of the camraderie, too. Shooting ten fives from the 500 yard line. Shooting a "possible" in rapid fire.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

I always felt warm and fuzzy (and deaf after) when firing the SMAW. It's fun to blip away with the 9mm tracers and then let the 83mm rocket fly!

The MK19 was just about as much fun as you could have. Of course the .50 was pretty sweet. To be honest anything that went BANG real loud and fast was a winner in my book.

M240G/GAU-17

My two favorites have to be the GAU-17 (Navy/Marine Corps version of the M134- http://dillonaero.com/SM134.html )
I shot about two hundred rounds off of a trainer at Verona Loop.

And the M240G, shot from the side of one of HMLA-269's Huey's

Gatling gun with free ammo is even better!
I forgot one- I got to shoot an MP5 with a suppressor off the fantail of a ship. That was pretty cool too.

Nothing beats the feel of the MK 19 while standing in the back of a Hummer. The rhymic Thump. Thump. Thump. Damn it almost makes me wish I was back in the Corps.

I was in 269 1983-1987
the version then was called GAU-2B. We shot the slow speed 3000??
in 3 second bursts. If it jammed the fun was over and we had to count rounds when we got back.

My SAW was awesome! It was quite the weapon of destruction. Tales of feeling invincible while firing a belt full of tracers at night are true!
My other favorite was the MK19. Oh what a joy to shoot.
These two are the ones that were the most fun. I also was very fond of my M16A2. After all I am a former active duty Marine.

I hated the M16A2 with M203. Some loved it, I hated it. It is a shameful thing to do to a rifle. Glad to have 'em in the squad just did not want one for myself.

Second most hated for me was the Beretta. As worn out as the .45's were I hated the Beretta even more. What a piece of garbage.
