What name to pick for AKC registration?

I was wondering what registered name to pick for our GSD named Cooper. Do you go by the Dam or Sire or something else? The Sire is named Von Sternhof Gorbi and the Dam is named Lynn Vom Argatos. Also what is the difference between Vom and Von? So what you would guys pick to put on his registration papers?

Vom means from, I dunno what Von means. My GSD's name is Bosc Vom Wasserturm. Translates to Bosco from the Watertower. There is a watertower near where he was born. The Germans sometimes use the name of the kennel, and sometimes the name of the sire or dam, but they usually pick out an object or landmark near the birthplace. This is what I was told. I hope this helps at least a little bit. Are you gonna do any type of competing with Cooper? Bosco was already started in schutzhund when I got him, so I've gotten into that with him. Plan to compete for SchH1 in December 2nd.

This is probably not much help unless you want to start a new trend, but I love telling this story.

When I was 10 we were given a Pekingese puppy, which I promptly named Spanky. Since it was AKC registerable, we had to choose a name for the papers. I, of course, chose Spanky. But I was told to make a second choice, since the AKC would probably never go with that.

The first time Grandma Rose saw the dog, she said, "Phooey on you!" in a playful manner. So, I submitted that phrase spelled thusly, FUI YON YU.

It was immediately accepted.

I wonder if anyone else has chosen that name...

My wife heard that you are suppose to name them after the strongest blood line. Which in Cooper's case is the Dam

The dog is usually named after the kennel he or she came from...

My GSD's are: Axel Vom Blizen Haus and Logan Vom Blizen Haus...At least that's the way they do it with the German dogs...

Vom and von both mean from, but von is like from a city, and vom is from a place. Kind of confusing, but they both mean from.

Oh, So his mom is basically "Lynn from Argatos" Whatever Argatos means though!?

Thank you! I'll be sure to tell him. Might give him a big head though. Actually that might be a good thing, maybe his ears won't look so out of proportion.

I guess that picture doesn't show it very well, but his head looks smaller than it should be compared to the rest of him.

He's a great dog. Extremely protective of our 7 year old.
He won't let her out of his sight and if we are playing around in the yard he about yanks my arm off is she goes out of his sight.
