changing file from bmp to jpeg

I have a picture I want to use as avatar, but when I put it in I got a message saying that it wasnt jpeg. It is currently in a bmp file. Does anyone know how to change it to jpeg or if it is even possible. Thanks

I don't know how other photo manipulation software works, so I'll tell you how *I* do it using Photoshop.

I simply use the "Save for Web" option and I can then save as .jpg or .gif.

Maybe other photo manipulation software programs have that option?

If you don't have PS you can open it in MS Paint and save as, change type to jpg
