New Deer Rifle...

Just picked up this rifle used. It's a Thompson/Center Encore in .308 Winchester with a 26" barrel. It came with a synthetic black stock, but I keep reading good things about the Pro Hunter Flextech stock, so I picked up a camo one to put on it (the black flextech's are sold out everywhere I found) I really like the looks of the stainless with camo stock though. I slapped a Leopold Vari X II 3-9 x 40mm scope on there. In the end, it all cost me about 1k. Can't wait to shoot it and buy more barrels for it of course!

That is a really good looking rig you have there. I want to get the same thing in a muzzleloader for next year.

Nice rifle.

I shot one of those the other day a friend has, in 7mm Rem. Mag.
Very accurate, and handled very well. I may look into one of those some day myself. Always liked the idea of a single shot rifle, makes you know even more, that every shot must count.

Congrats, nice gun Hoss.

Here is a picture of the big doe I shot with the rifle. My 150 grain Fusion softpoint went through and through on the shoulders. I put a second round in her from her front chest that exited on her back hip also. I couldn't argue with that penetration.

Wow - that doe looks huge.

Either that or your just a little feller - JK.

Do you think that you needed the second shot? Every time I've done it I've boogered up more meat than I would have imagined (but can't stand to see a deer suffer).

Regardless, way to go.

Glad you got some time on leave to get your head straight.

I have a couple of friends that were on subs - takes a different breed. Thanks for your service!

I often wonder about the second shot too. I definately messed up a lot of meat. But my father taught me to keep shooting until the deer was down for good, out of respect for the animal. So, that is what I do.

Congrat's on the Encore and the doe!!

I have a blue Encore in .308 win with a 24" barrel. It shoots the Hornady 150 grain SST's very well. The bullet works great on Va whitetails.

Since you made the mistake of buying an Encore the addiction will be setting in hard... To help in your addiction enjoy these pages....

Your father taught you well.

You just never know how well that first shot worked. My dad learned that the hard way when he shot his first deer. Saw it go down, jumped out of his stand to run over and start gutting it, and it jumped up and ran off. He spent the rest of the day tracking it before he finally found it dead.

I listened to that lesson. If I can see the deer and the head is up it gets another round. If it's laying flat on the ground I wait 10-20 minutes before walking up to it, just to be sure.
