Gun Range Reviews for the Sacramento Area

I'd like to use this thread to post reviews on gun ranges in the Sacramento Area.

I'd like it if other Californian GlockTalkers would add different threads for their locations, so when we travel we can see where to shoot.

I'd also like to remind the members to keep safe and keep alert at all times, because gun ranges tend to be in isolated areas.

THE GUN RANGE IN NORTH HIGHLANDS -
(916) 972-1484
3479 Orange Grove Ave.
North Highlands, CA 95660

A brand new range, just opened July 4.

http://thegunrange.biz/

COST: Flat rate $ 17 per DAY, all you can shoot.
EQUIPMENT: Handguns, shotguns, rifles. 9 am to 10 pm.
RANGE RULES: See the above link for range rules.
SIZE: 15 lanes, handgun, rifle, shotgun.

- Rapid Fire (ok)
- Holster draw (if you are trained...and you have privacy in a section...or with other experienced LTC holders).
- All kinds of calibers ok, no steel jacketed, steel core, tracer, armor piercing or incendiary).

This is a brand new range. They are stocking up their for-sale guns and ammo etc. They rent guns, more details when I learn them.

This was my first time shooting my new 23. And my first time at the Gun Range. My first time at an indoor range, my second time on any range, my second time shooting ever!

So, your classic newbie, with no basis for comparison, but an experienced shopper and consumer. I went today, Wednesday, about 2 pm and was served immediately, with professionalism and a smile. I always like that!

I expected to get a tiny bit of attitude, since I am a new shooter. Not a bit of it! The staff were welcoming to the point of being charming. (Maybe they get tired of all you big hairy guys ). So, ladies, expect to be welcomed in a very sincere way.

I had a couple of jams on my Glock that turned out to be crap ammunition. Asked for a Range Master, got one immediately, who unsnarled my and chose some better ammo for me, at a very reasonable price.

I was shooting at short ranges, 3 and 7 yards, mainly just trying the gun out, shooting .22 through an Advantage Arms conversion and .40 on the Glock. I did pretty well, didn't get knocked on my *** by the .40 cal, and I thought I would be.

I can tell when I'm being treated like a valued customer, whether at the dentist or at the shooting range. They clearly know they depend on their customers alone, to get their business started, and that's a good thing.

I'd love it if they'd think about paid memberships with some reserved hours for members and discounts.

This range has my business as long as I can shoot. Especially when it's 102 degrees out!

According to the range staff: If anyone is concerned with their safety in the parking lot, please ask a staff member to escort you to your vehicle.

Sac Sheriff has a heavy presence in the area (both marked and unmarked units) and CHP regularly parks in the driveway to work traffic.

Here's a link with a detailed review from "Adrenaline" at Calguns.net.

I just joined the Yolo Sportsmen's Association in Davis. http://yolo.net/sportsmen/. A friend is teaching me skeet there, so I'm there at least once a week. Might as well join, which is a very economical $ 40 per year.

It's in the back of beyond, near the Yolo County Airport. But it's worth the hike. It's pretty bare bones in the clubhouse, but really nice people. The members have been really nice to me. They are intolerant on safety issues and using ammo that is not allowed, and that's ok by me.

It's economical, families and kids are welcome, they have classes and lots of shooter clubs inside the association.

Here are the rates, and they do not take credit or debit cards. Bring cash or checks.

Spring Hours: Began March 11 & Ended June 8
In Past Wednesday - Sunday 9:00AM - 6:00PM

Fall-Winter Hours: Began October 17 & Ended March 10
In Past Wednesday - Sunday 9:00AM - 5:00PM

Fees: Rifle Pistol Range *
Please read Rifle Pistol Range Rules in [PDF] [MSWord] [New MSWord]
Members $3.00 per DAY
Non-members $9.00
(Includes first two targets, additional $1.00 each)

Trap & Skeet
Day fee $3.00 (1 time day fee in addition to cost of a round)
member $5.00 per round
non-member $7.00 per round
Sporting Clays
Member 1st. round $16.00
additional rounds $13.00
Non-member 1st. round $19.00
additional rounds $16.00

RE: the Gun Range, I am really glad we have another local range and I plan to shoot there.

Unfortunately, historically, there have been too many problems at night associated with the problem people who frequent some of the adjacent businesses, and the nearby parts of Watt Avenue. Remaining alert to what is going on around you should go a long way toward avoiding the problems those people cause. Be sure to lock your car and watch for anyone taking an unnecessary interest in you or your possessions.

I've enjoyed range at YSA.

I personally do not like going down to watt after 3:00 yes I would take caution, there are many other ranges in and around sac that are much safer and better. there is an indoor range in Elk Grove that is nice gets busy at times but nice and you can rent guns to try out.

SACRAMENTO VALLEY SHOOTING CENTER / FOLSOM SHOOTING CLUB - Sloughhouse CA - (near Sacramento)

http://www.sacvalley.org/index.html

I went to this club today as a guest of a member. It's a really nice range. I'll go there again and I'm considering a membership. Membership is a little higher than some clubs, $150, $75 for seniors. You must be an NRA member to join, which adds to the cost. You can agree to do 10 hours of work at the range per year and get a free membership. (Now who couldn't come up with a 10 hours a year, or 5 hours for seniors?). They pro-rate if you join in mid year.

The club is open to the public on certain days and only to members on certain other days. I'm told it's real busy on weekends, but what range isn't? Their ammo prices are about typical for ranges. There's a 15% discount for members. Not the cheapest I've seen, ever. But it's not ridiculously high.

They have a well stocked 'pro-shop'. The people there are extremely nice, the range is clean and well kept. I saw a couple families there, several people with teenagers in tow and quite a few women. It's a safe place to go by yourself, I think. They do a 15 minute timed rotation for 'cease fire', which gets you shooting quickly when you arrive.

Big selection of distances, including 1000 yards. (Yes, there really are targets out there. Can't see 'em? Me neither). Skeet and Trap as well as rifle ranges. They have an assortment of specialized groups to join and they have classes often too. They have a really good youth program, I'm told.

I liked it quite well, and since it's near Rancho Murieta, there are good places to have lunch, once you're done shooting.

Dragon was asking GlockN to explain his/her experience at The Gun Range. I have contacted GlockN twice over the last month, asking for more information and have not received an answer.

I am forced to conclude that GlockN is a probable Troll.

Bonnie- It was nice to see you back at the range! Sorry if we made too much noise last night in the last bay- we were testing our new AK47 rentals. The owner took a hot shell down his shirt and I got it on video!

OMG ! This happens to guys too?

No, not too much noise. Savannah and I were having too much fun to notice and when I'm blasting away with .45's I don't notice much.

Glad you guys had fun. It was a good looking dance, BTW.

The same range the thread is about, IIRC, the one you said you wouldn't go to.

If anyone is concerned with their safety in the parking lot, please ask a staff member to escort you to your vehicle.

Here is another video:

Actually, Dragon, the thread is about Range Reviews of any range we go to, not just one in particular.

But thanks for answering Girl's question. And thanks for adding info about the parking lot, I'll add it to the review. Great video!

No worries!

Yes- it's not a great neighborhood... but when I left tonight- six local SO SWAT guys with big guns were on the range.

You think if I asked them for help they'd join in?

A group of Dep's asked if they could shoot on their lunch/dinner break (code7) and their boss said no. I used to work for an SO and our policy was that if you shot with your sidearm (even dispatching a deer) you were required to go back to the station, write a report and clean it. So, I understand.
