AR stock in NY

This may sound like a stupid question and I looked around for an answer but I couldn't find it. The question is, in NY my AR stock has to be pinned so it isn't capable of being adjustable, can I unpin it and shorten it up and then pin it again to keep it "legal" even though I now have a shorter stock?
