Question about CCW and schools..

I pick up my grandkids at school quite often. Am I good to go carrying...? We do have Power of Attorney if that matters...

As I understand it, you're fine so long as the gun doesn't leave the car while on school grounds.

it doesn't matter if you are in charge of the care/custody of the child; as the law puts it, as long as you are dropping off/picking up, you are okay.

whether the gun leaves the car may be a non-issue (depending on the situation). MI law is fairly vague in saying that you can't carry a gun IN a daycare, dorm, classroom, etc. what about just outside a daycare? what about in a college building, but not actually IN a classroom?

you may know as well as i do that MI cops are fairly cool about decent people CCWing. every encounter i've had has been a non issue

By me being the grandparent my thinking is that doesn't make me a legal guardian. Unless me haveing power of attorney changes it somehow...

The state police word it like this

Pistol Free Areas

Individuals licensed to carry a concealed pistol by Michigan or another state are prohibited from carrying a concealed pistol on the following premises

"Schools or school property but may carry while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up if a parent or legal guardian"

While in a vehicle is the key words here I think.

School parking lots are exempt from the pistol free zone area.

The following is from the Michigan State Police website:

Pistol Free Areas

Individuals licensed to carry a concealed pistol by Michigan or another state are prohibited from carrying a concealed pistol on the following premises:

1.Schools or school property but may carry while in a
vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking
up if a parent or legal guardian

2.Public or private day care center, public or private child
caring agency, or public or private child placing agency.

3.Sports arena or stadium

4.A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale
of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises

5.Any property or facility owned or operated by a church,
synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship,
unless the presiding official allows concealed weapons

6.An entertainment facility that the individual knows or
should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more

7.A hospital

8.A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college,
or university

9.A Casino

"Premises" does not include the parking areas of the places listed above in 1 through 8.

The parking areas are exempted. See packing/org michigan section then taket he link to the MCLs for the exact wording. Keep the wbsite on your favs. I travel and use it a lot.

The title was yeppers aka yes. So I was agreeing and added the info about packing.org the site I use a lot for travel info.

I know about the parking lot exemption but it seems these two conflict with each other.

IIRC the parking lot exemption came later on when they modified the law correct...? That would explain the contradictory wording...

Right you are. The parking lot exemption came in 2003, when they updated the original law from 2001.

OK, I'm good now. I kept focusing on the Parent or Guardian issue and my pea brain wouldn't let the Parking Lot rule to come forward.
