House resoundingly approves gun-license privacy
By W. Gardner Selby | Wednesday, April 18, 2007, 11:07 AM
Dripping Springs Rep. Patrick Rose won resounding preliminary approval of his proposal ending the ability of anyone to check with the state on whether someone else has a license to carry a concealed handgun.
Democratic Rep. Lon Burnam of Fort Worth urged rejection by saying it didn’t make sense to make handgun licenses the only state-issued licenses not subject to open-records inquiries.
“Why should we treat this particular license as a particularly protected class?” Burnam asked. “We need to defend the principle of open records.”
Rose, a Democrat, urged approval on behalf of 267,000 licensed Texans.
Members backed the proposal by 135-7.
Among the “no” votes: Rep. Valinda Bolton, D-Austin, who said afterward she voted as a parent who wants to keep the right to check on whether someone has a license for a handgun.
“As a parent, I want to know that I could” check that, she said.
Courage is almost a contradiction in terms...it means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.
