Prairie Dog Hunting / Sniper Matches in Pueblo, 2008 **with pics**

Based on what feedback I get, in 2008 there will Precision Rifle and Hunter type matches in Pueblo West. Using the below target and match description there will always be 40 dogs to shoot April thru Oct.

The Great Prairie Dog Steel Shoot

10 Steel Prairie Dog Targets ranging from 175-400 yards shot under time constraints.

Each competitor will shoot the match four times requiring no more than 40 rounds.

One shot per target. No make up shots.

No penalties for misses. Only points earned for hits.

15 total seconds allowed per shot.

Targets hit within the first 10 seconds are worth 10 points. Hits between 10.01 seconds and 15.00 seconds are worth 5 points. If the competitor does not take a shot before 15.01 seconds or shoots after 15.01 seconds, it is a 10 point penalty, hit or miss.

In the event of a tie, the shoot-off will be a 4 inch plate at 425 yards. First shooter to miss is the loser.

Shooters start prone behind rifle with bolt/action open and ammunition in hand.

Upon start signal shooter may load rifle and engage target.

3 divisions. Heavy rifle, 12+ pounds. Light rifle, under 12 pounds. Semi-Auto rifle.

Scopes, bi-pods, sandbags, rests, muzzle brakes, laser rangefinders allowed.

40 gn minimum bullet weight.

Steel Core, Armor-Piercing and Tracer ammo *NOT* allowed. $50 fine per target that is damaged with above ammo.

Match re-entries are allowed. However only the first time counts for match score.

So far it looks like there will be a few guys coming out for these matches.

The match date isnt 100% firm, but close.

Some of the match rules may change a bit between now and then, but all in all it will still end up being great Prairie Dog hunting practice or "Sniper-ish" training.

Here is the pic of the target. The dog is 7 inches tall.

The small "foot" at the bottom of the dog is bright orange on bottom and flips up when the target is hit making it easier for the shooter and spotter to call hits.

Provided the match date fits with my schedule but I'll do what I can to make that happen. I don't expect to shoot remarkably well but man it sound like a blast!

Hope to see you there.

It isnt about winning, not at all. Its about getting out there and shooting. With time, you will get better. If not, you will have made some friends and contacts on where to hunt the real critters.

When you do go out to hunt real dogs 400 yard shots wont even make you flinch. After all, you shoot some that far out every month.

Hozer, I saw the requrements on bullet size and composition but I'm hoping to use my .280 Rem. with both Winchester Ballistic Silvertips and Federal Accubonds. Both are factory hunting cartridges that shoot very well in my gun. Most importantly its my primary hunting rifle and I want as much trigger time as I can get, especially at longer ranges. I hope it will be acceptable as its my only gun capable of those ranges...for now.

Thanks, Chris

A 280 will be more than fine. Looking forward to meeting you.

This Saturdays weather looks to be good.

And it looks like I will have a loaner rifle for use (first come, first served) to anyone without one. A suppressed Tubb2000 chambered in 6XC. You buy the ammo (115 DTAC) and your off to the races.

All turned out well. Ended up with about twice (almost 20) as many shooters as I thought would make it out.

It started out breezy. By 2:00 the wind was a steady 20-25 out of the south-east. By 3:00 it was gusty, but still out of the south. I live north of the range and just about coasted home due to the howling tailwind.

It was a lot of fun and some real good shooters showed up.

So far it looks like Mr Butterpants is the man with Mike Aos, Lizard and Charlie hot on his heels. No perfect scores.

Surgeon Rifles donated hats to everyone at todays match. Please remember them the next time you go to buy a custom rifle or action. Support those that support you. http://www.surgeonrifles.com/homepage/

The common caliber today was 223 and 308. Also found was 20 Tactical, 22BR, 6XC, 6-284, 6.5-284 and 260.

The lack of dings/holes in the targets just reemphasizes the fact that if you cry once and buy good quality AR-500 steel, it wont get all chewed up and beat to hell.

Being the first match like this I have put on, the learning curve was steep. But we recovered fast. I was able to draw on the experience of the Colorado Multi-Gun crowd and they gave me a few tips on how to make run faster and with less ass pain.

Next months match should go much faster after thinking about what needs changing. For starters the match director needs to remember to shoot the match. I only remembered to get 10 out of 40 rounds downrange.

I will post some pics when I finish the scores and get some fluids in me.

Tomorrow is IDPA and Monday night is IPSC.

I completely forgot to post pics. My memory is perfect, but short. TC the IDPA Mall Ninja took the pics.

Lets start this off with a view of the Heavy Gun match winners backside. Shooting a 260. I think TC might have a man crush on him...

And the Light Gun match winner, Lizard Waltzer the famous gunsmith, and the 223 that he built.

And some others.

Chuck and his 308.

Brain and his 308.

Pueblo West President Chris Skarmas shooting a Roscoes Custom AR-15 chambered in 20 Tactical. About 1/3 of the shooters were using AR's of some flavor.

My pop came out to watch everyone shoot and help with set-up.

Me and my Tubb when I actually remembered I was supposed to shoot. You gotta love Shark supressors. Its one one behind Mr Butterpants leg.

And Harrison breaks out his Elk hunting rifle (6.5-284) to buck the insane winds.

We were there shooting today, the third Saturday. Just like we do every third Saturday. I will grab a calendar and post some exact dates if that helps.

I did not see your post at CO AR-15.com. Sorry. What name do you go by there? Uncle Sam has had me out of town a lot and I just got back in town last night and leave again this Tuesday.

I will add your name to the match announcements email list.

This Saturday is 16 August. It also happens to be the 3rd Saturday of the month.

That means its time for the monthly Sniper Match.

Dont be scared. If it was easy, girls could do it.

My man on the ground in Pueblo West says the berms are pretty sloppy with the all the rain for the past three days and it has been pouring there since midnight. Getting the targets out and back would most likely lead to stuck trucks or torn up berms.

Hate to do it but todays match is a cancel.

See you in Sept.
