And, I'll be LBC'ing or FedExing the prize to the winner,

Ok will give it my best shot:

1) Remington Rolling Block in .43 Spanish; late 19th century, issued to Filipino soldiers when the Spanish Army got the Mauser.

2) No idea

3) One year from its publishing (forgot the date)

4) Beretta Jetfire .25 or .22 short; Glock 34; Steyr-Mannlicher 8mm; FN Browning M1910; don't know the little guy.

5) Dressed-up Thompson M1 in Alien; second looks like a dressed-up Hi-Point; don't know the Voltes V gun

5) .45 ACP (you got two 5s)

6) The first guy looks like Gen. Mikhail Kalashnikov; the second, Bill Ruger? Of course Gen. Kalashnikov should smile, the AK-47 is the most widely distributed firearm in the world.

7) The penalty for possessing the .44 magnum is greater than the .380 since the former is high-powered, the latter low-powered, also for the former it goes to the RTC; the latter to the MTC.

8) PD 1866

As for the rest, sorry no idea.

Thanks! I renamed the second one "5b.", and....

CatsMeow got parts of #4 and #6 right!!

Scores:
CatsMeow - 2 points
Allegra - 1/2 point
New_comer - 1/2 point

4. Identify the folowing five handguns, from their profile images
(1 point per ID, for 5 points total)
Band of Glockers

That is indeed an FN Browning Model 1910 at lower right
A very handsome (.380 ACP or .32 ACP) pistol
----Four more handgun ID's left in the pic!!!

6. Who are these two men, and why are they smiling?
(2 points)
Band of Glockers
That's indeed Mikhail Kalashnikov on the left.
The AK-47 is indeed one of the most successful rifles in history...
Why WOULDN'T he be smiling?
----Who's the other gentleman, then?

Nice going, CM!
Keep trying, guys!!
All 10 questions are still live (but partially chipped):

1. What firearm was used to kill (our Philippine National Hero) José Rizal?
When was this firearm officially introduced in the Philippines?
(5 points)
Keep trying!

2. What firearm cartridge is associated with Rizal's inamorata, Josephine Bracken?(3 points)
Keep trying!

3. Until when does the Current Amnesty for Loose Firearms run? (4 points)
Keep trying!

4. Identify the folowing five handguns, from their profile images
(1 point per ID, for 5 points total)
Band of Glockers
The one on the lower right is done.
Four more of those handguns to go!

5. Identify the following movie/TV firearms, from the images provided:
(1 point per ID, for 3 points total)
Band of Glockers
Band of Glockers
Band of Glockers
you have to name the firearm in the movie!

5b. Which of the folllowing is probably the loudest when fired:
.45 ACP, 9mm Parabellum, or .380 ACP?

(3 points)
Keep trying!

6. Who are these two men, and why are they smiling?
(2 points)
Band of Glockers
Who's the guy on the right?!

7. What is the penal difference between conviction for illegal possession of
a .44 Magnum revolver, and conviction for illegal possession of a .380 ACP pistol?

(3 points)
You gotta specify the difference!

8. What law prevents Twin Pines Inc. from openly selling its select-fire M14's and AK47's,
to non-LEO's and non-military citizens of the Philippines?
(3 points)
Not PD 1866. Keep trying!

quiz entry

some of my answer are just guesses.

1. Model 1893 7mm Mauser Rifle
2. Model 1893 7mm Mauser Rifle
3.
4. beretta 950 jetfire 25acp, glock17L, derringer of some sort, Steyr-Mannlicher 1905, FN Browning 1910
5. Armat M41A from Aliens, unidentified (possibly early star wars), voltes bazooka from Voltes V
5b. 45 acp is the loudest according to "average decibel output" charts, but because of the open bolt, in my experience the 380 seems louder. 380 will "sound" loudest.
6. mikhail kalashnikov on the left, eugene stoner on the right. they are smiling as in this photo they are holding each other's gun.
7. prision correccional in its maximum period and a fine of not less than Fifteen thousand pesos (P15,000) for the 380acp, prision mayor in its minimum period and a fine of Thirty thousand pesos (P30,000) for the .44 as it is considered "high powered firearm"
8. R.A. 8294
9. when the round gets caught at the lip of the magazine.
10. IMR = improved medium rate, Unique, cordite (because it looked like cords)

5b. 9mm is louder.

6. thats Mikhail Kalashnikov and Eugene Stoner

zorkd scores! so does cebuboy!
zorkd got much of #1, part of #4, bits of #5
the balance of #6, all of #7 and a third of #10
cebuboy got chunks of #4 and #5 and toasted #5b

Scores
zorkd - 10 points
cebuboy - 4 points
CatsMeow - 2 points
Allegra - 1/2 point
New_comer - 1/2 point

1. What firearm was used to kill (Philippine National Hero) José Rizal?
When was it officially introduced in the Philippines?
(5 points)
Band of Glockers

zorkd got this one, though Catsmeow came really close!
Rizal was executed by a squad of Filipinos armed (by one 'insider' account)
temporarily with the Mauser Model 92 (7.65mm).
Band of Glockers
It seems some Spaniards thought it 'neat' to use their fairly new rifles
on their 'Public Enemy No.1'.
The Filipino riflemen themselves had Mausers trained on them from behind,
at point blank range by a squad of Spanish infantry.

The balance of info remaining is too easy to Google up, so (zorkd only gets 2 out of 5 points)...
The Fusil Mauser Español Modelo 1892 had been named the issue rifle of
the Spanish Ejercitos, per Real órden de 30 de Noviembre de 1892, issued in
the name of Alfonso XIII by his mother, the Reina Regente Maria Cristina.
Some 2,070 units of the rifle were shipped to the Philippines through early 1894,
clearly in time for use in the public execution, and for the violent revolution
that followed.

4. Identify the folowing five handguns, from their profile images
(1 point per ID, for 5 points total)
Band of Glockers
zorkd got two right, for 2 points:
a Glock 17L (longslide) and a Mannlicher Model 1905,
at upper right and lower left respectively! His answer on the
latter was just specific enough to count
cebuboy got the Colt No.1 in the center... nice call, for 1 point!
[/b]

5. Identify the following movie/TV firearms, from the images provided:

M41-A Pulse Rifle - Allegra and zorkd take a half-point each for this
Band of Glockers
From James Cameron's movie "Aliens", the M41-A Pulse Rifle
is an air cooled, fully automatic combat rifle, firing caseless 10x24mm AP
(from a 95+ round U-bend magazine) in either semi automatic, five round burst, or
fully automatic mode. The Pulse rifle has a small battery powered digital display
indicating the number of rounds left in the magazine. It has a retractable stock
and an underslung 30mm PN grenade launcher.

Voltes Bazooka - New_comer and zorkd take a half-point each for this!
Band of Glockers
From Nagahama Tadao's anime series "Voltes V", the Voltes Bazooka is a retractable,
automatic RPG launcher, built into the forearm of an extremely large robot that
is the star of the show.

5b. Which of the folllowing is probably the loudest when fired:
.45 ACP, 9mm Parabellum, or .380 ACP?
(3 points)
cebuboy nailed this one...
A lot depends on brand/type of cartridge, but a comparison made
at Ball State U (Indiana) said to be generally-representative,
lists the three cartridges and their dB output thus:
9mm Parabellum 159.8 dB
380 ACP 157.7 dB
.45 ACP 157.0 dB

http://www.freehearingtest.com/hia_gunfirenoise.shtml

6. Who are these two men, and why are they smiling?
(2 points)
CatsMeow and zorkd split the points on this one!
That's Mikhail Kalashnikov and Eugene Stoner.
They're admiring each other's contributions to firearms technology:
the AK-47 and the M16.
Band of Glockers
Two of the most successful rifles in history...
Why WOULDN'T they be smiling?

7. What is the penal difference between conviction for illegal possession of
a .44 Magnum revolver, and conviction for illegal possession of a .380 ACP pistol?
(3 points)
zorkd brutalized this one for a solid 3 points...
Per Presidential Decree No. 1866 (29 June 1983; AMENDED 6 June 1997)
A .44 Mag revolver is a high-powered handgun, meaning it dispenses a cartridge
greater in caliber and/or power than a 9mm Parabellum. The penalty specified for
illegal possession of the same is 30,000 pesos in fines, and/or prision mayor
in its minimum term (8 years). A .380 pistol lower is a low-powered handgun, and
the penalty for illegal possession thereof is 15,000 pesos in fines, and/or
prision correcional in maximum (6 years). The 'difference is thus (speaking
very roughly, since sentencing is subject to the judge's discretion):
2 years and 15,000 pesos.

10. Name the three earliest smokeless powders for firearms,
and WHY they're named whatever they're named.
(1 point each, for 3 total)
zorkd got the most recent of the three, for 1 point!
Cordite - a British ripoff (Fred Abel and James Dewar) of one
of the other two smokeless propellants, using guncotton and
petroleum jelly in place of collodion and camphor.
Cordite was rendered into a paste which was then extruded into long noodles
that hardened into rigid strings, or cords... hence the name.

Nice going!
Keep trying, guys!!
6 questions are still live (some partially chipped):

3. Until when does the Current Amnesty for Loose Firearms run? (4 points)
Keep trying! It ain't June 13, 2008!

4. Identify the following five handguns, from their profile images
(1 point)
Band of Glockers
Just the one in the upper left remaining!

5. Identify the following movie/TV firearms, from the images provided:
(1 point)
Band of Glockers
you have to name the firearm and the show!

8. What law prevents Twin Pines Inc. from openly selling its select-fire M14's and AK47's,
to non-LEO's and non-military citizens of the Philippines?
(3 points)
Not P.D. 1866, nor R.A. 8294 which amended the former.
Keep trying!

9. What is a stem bind?(2 points)
Still too general, Paul.
Keep trying!

10. Name the the other 2 earliest marketed smokeless powders for firearms,
aside from cordite, and WHY they're named whatever they're named.

(1 point each)
Keep trying!

....and some o' you may be wondering: in these BoG Quizzes,
I usually give out bonus questions, sometimes about the BoG itself, so where are the bonus questions?

Well, I'll think about adding just one bonus question,
a real monster of a puzzler, worth maybe 10 points,
tomorrow evening... heheheh.

3. Until when does the Current Amnesty for Loose Firearms run? (4 points)
Here's how EO 585 is written which btw was promulgated December 11, 2006:
Quote:
SECTION 1. Any natural and juridical person who possess loose firearms may surrender the same to the Philippine National Police for custody and apply for the corresponding license as required by existing laws within one (1) year from the effectivity of this Order, excluding the election period (January 14, 2007 to June 13, 2007), which was declared by the COMELEC pursuant to COMELEC Resolution 7707. Concerned holders of said firearms may avail of this amnesty only within the period. Each firearm submitted for licensing shall have its own distinct firearm description.
So if it's a year without the election ban, the order should have expired December 10, 2007 (counting promulgation date as day 1). But since there is a 151-day exclusion due to the May 2007 elections, that should still be added. So total days elapsed should be 364 + 151 = 515 days after promulgation date of December 11, 2006.

That day falls on Friday, May 9, 2008!

Am I right?
