The F-14 had a rough start but once the bugs got worked out it was a pretty good aircraft. I really liked the A+.

If you look at the specs ,the F14 still exceeds the newer aircraft in some areas . Sadly one spec was maintenance hours per flight hour , and fuel burn .

As a kid at the Miramar air show , A top gun pilot would give a speech about the F-14 " If you left in full after burner , to the north east -you would find yourself out of fuel at 45,000 feet over Denver in 27 minutes " .

We never do that as the engines would be trashed .

I was in a VF Squadron when we were transitioning from F4's to Tomcats. Nice birds.

That was maaaaaany moons ago.
