Is Nutter going to clean up Philly?

This guy had better be a better magician than Chris Angel! Either that or have connections with God himself! Cause it'll take a frickin miracle.

My money says he is so anti-gun he makes Feinstein look like Heston.

I could be wrong though.

Thanks!

He HAS to be better than John "wrong-way" Street......but, of course, that's not saying much.
He does seem to be very intelligent.....but very liberal. This may make him more dangerous. He can finesse where Street tried (unsuccessfully, for the most part) to bully.
He's got "anti-gun" written all over him.
His choice of Ramsey (from D.C.) as Police Commissioner also indicates that the emphasis of the Nutter Administration will lean much more heavily on "gun control" instead of effective "thug-control."

My cynical self thinks that the transfer from street to nutter is simply exchanging one group of people robbing the city's taxpayers blind and abusing the publc trust to another.

I do notice that there is a significantly higher police presence in the city, and they are pulling over people at a higher rate than I am used to seeing. (I drove all over phila every day from one end to another in the course of my job)

hardly scientific, mind you but something my coworkers have also noticed.

I will also point out that the media and many of the people in that town seem to think Nutter's taking over is tantamount to the second coming of christ. They really believe this guy will change the world.

Unfortunately phila people seem to not realize that change begins at home and that if you're not going to clean up after yourself and your neighborhood and make sure your kids go to school and stay out of trouble, the govt can only do so much- and likely that is very little indeed. They would rather hope that the city will solve all their problems for them, and that is just an unrealistic hope.

Ain't NEVER going to happen.

Philadelphia is doomed! The social cancer is too deep and down to the bone. Except for: higher welfare checks, bigger and better prisons, and even more free public medical care - Provided by the same damned fools who used to own Social Security - absolutely nothing is going to change for the better in, 'The City of Brotherly Love' until AFTER the Second Coming of Christ.

Philadelphia is doomed! If the rest of Pennsylvania wants to save itself from this malignant social cancer, everybody else should band together and dig a large moat around the city, thereby cutting off all the: venal socialist politicians, corrupt lawyers, welfare recipients, and repeat habitual offenders from the bulk of Pennsylvania's normal, hardworking, and law-abiding society.

The sooner the rest of Pennsylvania wakes up and isolates Philadelphia from the remainder of the state, the better it's going to be for the majority of those who are left. Philadelphia is doomed!

Interesting reply. Now I think you have to admit a moat ain't going to happen, but seriously, what IS the answer??

The answer has to come from OUTSIDE Philly for the reasons you stated above (corruption, low lifes, etc.)...possibly the national guard for a few months? Again, I'm just throwing that out there although it seems like it would be an absolute last resort...

Are you serious? The last thing you want is the Nation Guard or any other military entity patrolling the streets of any city in this county. Katrina should be warning enough.

The former mayor of philly is now the Governor of Pennsylvania. He is a gun grabbing fool and is constantly trying to get philly premption to make their own gun laws. Fortunately they are routinely denied that ability. One of the first things they would do is eliminate concealed carry in the city...because you know those CCW's are the cause of all the real killing going on right?

Hell if I couldn't carry in Philly I don't think I would ever go into the city.

That is how I feel. I hate going to Philly...and I have enough guns/ammo/gear to choke a horse!

I truely believe that this is a problem of the mind. It's ingrained into a specific culture. If it's more comfortable for you to call it "Philly Culture" so be it. But until you change values, methods of handling things (law/legislat.), and can start fresh, the situation really can only get worse..MUCH worse. I would go so far as to say we will see this mutation of a city evolve to engulf surrounding areas until either the citizens take it upon themselves to flush the gov. down the toilet and stand up against the scum or the gov. steps in and does some not so nice things (that very well could punish the innocent) in order to restore order (check points, door to door searches, remote/huge prisons, etc).

But as the replies to this thread show. Not a whole lot of faith is being put into this Mayor. I'm wondering what it'll take...so back to the thoughts...

Thanks!

Yup. Heard on the radio coming home this afternoon that Hizzoner is going to enact strict gun control laws on his own, without the approval of the courts or Harrisburg.
Let me guess, no one will be allowed to conceal/carry? That'll clean up the mess in Philly. Let's make the city a "gun-free" zone. (just a wild guess on my part)
I will never understand how some of these politicians openly disregard the laws and constitution of the Commonwealth. Won't someone please hold them accountable?
Thank God for reps such as Clymer and Roher.

I understand that the radio station at 1210 on the am band is going to give Ramsey and D.A. Lynn Abraham their own talk shows. I think they're going to be a once-a-month deal.....not unlike the city administrations hope for firearm sales. Even Abraham is against CCW.
Anyway, the station has been promoting the Ramsey show with him saying that if it were up to him, there would be no concealed handguns at all.

This is what we have to look forward to with Ramsey, Nutter, and Rendell.

How does everyone think Nutter, or any other politician should handle the violence problem in Philly?

Democrat or Republican, Left Wing or Right Wing, it's going to be hard and take time. The real problem is with parenting, schooling and jobs.

Here is a good website to see the Philadelphia's School District report card: http://www.philasafesound.org/. While there are some promising parts there are also a lot of negatives. Drop Out rates and truancies.

I don't have a lot of time to get into specifics. The information is out there. The one thing I do know is that Street promised a bunch of stuff (money) to help the school district which never happened. As soon as Nutter came in he started to get that money to the school district. While I can't get into details about this, and let me say I do not work for the city or the school district, but it should be published soon. Will this stop the violence in the city, certainly not, but it is a promising step.

I do know this, a child who grows up in poverty, drops out of high school, is statistically more likely to resort to crime to "earn" a living. Unfortunately we cannot police parenting, although we should is some ways. So we have to start with schooling.

Itís a cycle that never stops. Baby born into broken, violent, poor home. Teenager drops out of high school, teenager resorts to "other" means of income, teenager has a baby, teenager goes to jail (or dies) and the cycle starts over.

Anyway thatís my morning rant. With the mortgage crisis, itís going to get worse for people before it gets better. I did hear on NPR about one city that buys foreclosed homes and spruces them up so they don't fall into disrepair. Have you seen some of the Philly neighborhoods?

I'd like to hear everyone's ideas on how to help.

Throwing money at the school district is going to do squat.

Anyone affiliated with the Phila School District can tell you how the money is being pissed away, with very little of it going to education.

The problem is, politicians like nutter have no answer to any problem beyond throwing money at it. And until the people of the city have had enough and try to work together with governement instead of waiting for government to do all their work, you could spend billions and the place will still be a dump.

Wow, pissing away money. They have no money to piss away, while the people who you know who are affiliated with the school district must really not know much, be really involved or so jaded (this happened to me at my old corporate job). I actually live in the city, my neighbors are teachers, administrators, etc. I talk to them all the time.

I see the lack of respect for anything day in day out. The way people deal with problems, the way they drive, etc. Every day I have to deal with "these" people. Complete utter lack of respect for anything but them selves. Where does this stem from? It obvious parenting is the first. We can't police parenting until its too late. So what next? Ding, ding, education. Where else are they going to learn?

While just throwing money at things doesn't fix them, using money correctly does. Do you really think the people are going to "come together"? This is what all the peace rallies try to do. Where the crime happens they don't talk. They are scared to talk. Witnesses get killed, intimidated, scared, etc and rightfully so. Its the mentality in these neighborhoods. This is another problem which needs to be addressed. What can be done here? Is it too late, is it never too late?

I just came across this article which I find pretty interesting on how other cities have reduced crime. Maybe we can learn from them?

Do I think Nutter will clean it up, no, but maybe at least he can start. Ramsey has, at least, had town hall meetings. Still wears his uniform, drives in a marked car and lives in Mt. Airy.

.
One example I can thinkof them pissing away money is that they they dumped so much money on their pay to play contracts in building new schools and sold the properties they owned at far less than market value.

Generally what they spend on contractors (and what they allow them to do) to take care of certain issues within their infrastructure is a downright sin.

Now that is what i get to see when I care to look.

This is not a problem unique to the school board, it is typical in phila govt institutions, but until they get their head out of their butt and stop wasting money on a wholesale scale, I really don't care if they get another dime. And as someone who does not live in the city, I do not want to see any of my tax money spent on an organization that merely funnels money to the friends of those in power.

Perhaps nutter will do something about this. I kind of doubt it. It isn't like he is an outsider to the way phila has been doing things for many years. Again, there is a changing of the guard, but I doubt there will be a change in how the city does business.
