CA CCW permits.
Forgive me if this has been beaten to death already. But what counties in CA are the best to obtain a CCW permit from? What is required to get one? and do any of them issue non-resident permits? My family wants to take a trip there and I would really really like to have my CCW permit.
Also other than high-cap mags, what can I not bring into your state? Assisted opening knives, midgets, cancer causing chemicals? I am also assuming open carry is right out, and I heard a gun in a vehicle is an instant felony. Is this all true?

In NorCal, counties near OR are good about issuing CCW permits.
In SoCal, Orange and San Bernardino Counties are good about issuing CCW permits.
It requires a lot of hoop jumping, some money and a lot of patience in order to obtain a CA CCW permit.
There are no CA non-resident CCW permits. Also CA does not recognize/honor any other states CCW permit.
Don't bring any of the following: assault weapon, cane gun or wallet gun, any undetectable firearm, any firearm which is not immediately recognizable as a firearm, any camouflaging firearm container, any ammunition which contains or consists of any flechette dart, any bullet containing or carrying an explosive agent, any ballistic knife, any multiburst trigger activator, any nunchaku, any short-barreled shotgun, any short-barreled rifle, any machinegun, any metal knuckles, any belt buckle knife, any leaded cane, any zip gun, any shuriken, any unconventional pistol, any lipstick case knife, any cane sword, any shobi-zue, any air gauge knife, any writing pen knife, any metal military practice handgrenade or metal replica handgrenade, or any instrument or weapon of the kind commonly known as a blackjack, slungshot, billy, sandclub, sap, or sandbag.
No ferrets, they are illegal in CA.
You can legally open carry while in unincorportate land which does not prohibit shooting. You can open carry an unloaded handgun which is holstered at your belt in any non-prohibited places (ie. schools, gov't buildings, airports, etc.). You can legally open carry or conceal carry without a permit, your handgun while at your residence, your buisness, your camp site (provided the camping grounds does not prohibit the possession of firearms) and your hotel/motel room.
Long arms (rifles/shotguns) need to be unloaded while in a vehicle. They need to be in a locked container, if you are driving through a school zone.
Handguns need to be unloaded and in a locked container while being transported.

A firearm in a locked container is not considered concealed.
A vehicle's glove or utility box is not considered a locked container.
Carrying a registered handgun concealed without a permit = misdemeanor.
Carrying a registered loaded handgun = misdemeanor.
A registered handgun concealed in your vehicle = midemeanor.
A loaded handgun in your vehicle = misdeamor.
Carrying an unregistered handgun = felony.
Carrying an unregistered loaded handgun = felony.
An unregistered handgun concealed in your vehicle = felony.
An unregistered loaded handgun in your vehicle = felony.
Registering a handgun is not mandatory.
Any handgun bought/transfered after 1990 is automatically registered during the DROS process.
Registering a handgun owned before 1989 is voluntary.
When moving into CA to become a CA resident, all handguns being brought into CA, must be registered.
Non-CA residents do not have the ability to register their handguns.

Explain this one... being military I'm told I can't get a CA CCW, even though I own a house in this state and have a CA drivers license, because I'm not technically a CA resident, but I was told I HAD to register my handguns.

CA is a "may issue" state.
Meaning the CLEO of your city/county may issue you a CCW permit if you fit the "criteria".
Criteria...
1. need to prove you are a resident of the city/county you are applying to.
2. provide proof that you are of good moral character.
3. show that you have "good cause" to recieve a permit.
4. complete a LE approved CCW course.
Some county sheriff's have changed their CCW policy to be close to "shall issue" as possible. But, it all depends on which county you live in.

Did your orders say CA is a permanent duty station? If not, could be a reason why the CLEO of the city/county you live in does not consider you a resident.
CA DOJ considers you a resident once you own property in CA and have a CA DL.

Own property and have a CA drivers license. I also live in a county that is generally very good about issuing permits. Guess I'll go try again.

More so if you donated to Corona's campaign...had I known that I'd have thrown a couple hundred his way...

Tulare County is very reasonable. Take the class(4hr) fill out paperwork, get 3character references, pay the fees and after a couple of months or less you will get a call to come pick up your ccw. No qualify or limit of carry guns on permit, as long as they fit on paper permit.
At least that is how it worked for me!

Three pistols, that's it. Take a pistol off, they put a record of the old pistol in your file. FYI.

The problem is that all the counties that comprise the majority of the population are nearly never issue, and because of gerrymandering and blatant corruption they stay locked that way. Something I read just today explains why the anti gun movement is so darn ravenous in CA: a court decision that basically stated that the 2nd Amendment doesn't mean jack s*** in the state, a case known as Hickman v. Block. Since that decision the antis have had a field day. I wholeheartedly applaud the sheriffs in the good issuing counties and hope they keep up the good work. However, the antis are perfectly comfortable in knowing they have the majority of the population on lockdown and efforts to fix that are going NOWHERE and for the most part isn't being tried. There is something decidedly amuck here, something has the place so screwed up that the assembly is overrun with antis, and those who aren't anti don't have the balls to stand up to them...and the people I'm working with to fix things are stuck. The most that they say can be done is play defense and at best hold as it is.

briantf,
I currently have 6 on my ccw. I took 2 off because I never have carried them. You can go in between renewals and they will put another gun on for you for no charge. I like living in our county!

Most counties have a limit of 3 weapons listed on the permit.
What county are you a resident of? I am curious!!!

Kern County (Bakersfield) issues more permits every year than any other County in CA. Here is the spreadsheet from CA's A.G. website. It lists the # of CCW's issued by county from 1987-2006. http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/...uances2006.pdf
Here is the FAQ's page from the A.G. http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/pubfaqs.php
You have to be a resident of the county you are applying to. I had to show two forms of proof of residency. I do not think you can get a non-resident permit, but I could be wrong.
Quiet-No ferrets? I had no idea. Not that I want one, just never heard that before.

Ferrets have been banned in CA since 1933.
As a menace to native wildlife, the agricultural interests of CA and the public health/safety.
According to CA Fish & Game, there are 1000 legally licensed ferrets in CA (for research/zoos) and approximately 100,000 illegally owned ferrets in CA.
