Man tries to rob bank with pretend gun
SPOKANE, Wash. - A man was arrested Tuesday after trying to rob the American West bank in the 9000 block of east Appleway with a pretend gun.
According to bank employees, Jason W. McKinney entered the bank branch about 12:25 p.m. He approached a teller and while fumbling with the front pouch pocket of his sweatshirt, demanded money.
The teller refused to give him any cash, so McKinney made his finger into the shape of a gun barrel and then put his hand into the sweatshirt pouch and poked out the material as if he was armed.
The teller denied to give the man any cash, telling him she knew he did not have a gun, then promptly set off an alarm. The suspect then confirmed with the teller that she had notified police and then demanded cash again.
The teller then left the desk to get a bag for the man who had decided to take a seat in the bank. Sheriff's deputies arrived on scene and took the man, who was still sitting, into custody without incident.
Deputies believe the man may have fallen off a bike before entering the bank. The man did have an abrasion on his face.
