Hey guys, I am signing up to take EMT class at the local junior college this summer. My goal is to become a firefighter, I am wanting your opinion on what to do after completing the class and passing the test.
Take on a part-time job as a EMT or become a volunteer firefighter along with my current full time job?
Either should be a good step to a paid career in firefighting.
We seem to hire guys fresh with no experience or other firefighters, but being an EMT already will definitely help you. Every department is different. Try to learn as much as possible about the department where you want to get hired. Good luck to you. You'll love it.

Both, if you can manage it. I spent a while working all day at my ambulance company, then volunteering all night at the firehouse. Not recommended to do for long periods of time (burn out), but for your first few months you'll be loving it so much you'll want to set up a bunk in the engine bay lol. Good luck!
Yup. My interests lie elsewhere (i.e. I don't want to be a fireman), but many of my coworkers/classmates/instructors are firefighters and pretty much all of them agree that paramedic is a massive step towards the front of the line if you want to be a firefighter, especially a full-time one.
