Cast iron pan in a self cleaning oven?

Thinking about putting a cast iron pan in a self cleaning oven for recoating of the pan.

Anyone know how hot a self cleaning oven gets?
How hot can I get my pan before I have an issue?

I've used a self-cleaning oven to strip cast iron in preparation for seasoning many times. It's probably my favorite method for removing old seasoning. It won't hurt the cast iron at all; and, it will definitely come out "in the white". That is, there will be nothing on the iron when it comes out of the oven, leaving you to start the seasoning process all over again.

The oven will get very hot. It won't damage the pan.

I use my self cleaning oven to clean my pizza stone.

Now I have to try my cast iron pans!

Is the seasoning really in need of removal? It is a carbon build up and shouldn't need removed to hear the professionals on the food shows talk about the subject?

If the pan got rusted, you'd probably want to strip & and start over on the seasoning.

Seasoning can wear and flake off, in time. I completely remove the old and apply new when I get that tangy metallic taste from my cast iron. It lets me know when it's time to do it again.

dont need 900 degrees to season a pan.

Scrub it clean

Coat it in peanut oil


425 for one hour will do it.

I just re-season iron cast with few bacons. I enjoyed eating bacons while I am seasoning the iron cast! Whooo!!!

Just test iron cast with water, if it is slippery then you have it seasoned.

I find it interesting how different people cook and clean their cast iron.

When my cast iron began to peal, it was time to start from scratch. Since then I season the pans as needed. I usually start with Crisco to get a base coat, then I fry fish.

My boss doesn't have near the patina on her pans as I.

I am currently seasoning a frying pan on my grill. I found the pan in my camping box horribly rusted, I hit it with a wire wheel in my drill, very tedious work. Then I remembered to bead blaster at my buddies auto shop. 30 minutes or so and it was pristine. The cool thing is, I learned the history of it after talking to my Mom (93yo) She remembered getting it used from my Grandmother in 1944, she knows Granny had it for a long time, but not sure how long.
I slathered it in crisco last night and put it on the gas grill at about 500 for about 1.5 hrs. I plan to do it one more time today. It looks great. I wish I took "before" pictures.

When a cast iron pan needs reseasoning, my mom taught me to rub it down real good with kosher salt to clean it, wash in very hot water with a mild soap, dry in hot oven, then wipe down with crisco, bake at 450 for an hour, wipe down, repeat once. In 35+ years of using cast iron almost every day, I have only needed to do it about 4 times.

I had a 700 degree thermometer in my oven when I "cleaned" it and it melted the thermometer.

Pretty hot.

I do a big Dutch Oven dinner for the neighborhood every July. People bring me real abused, rusted, dirty ovens to fix. I have them run the dutch ovens in a self cleaning oven and start over. It won't hurt cast iron unless it is real thin cheap import trash.

I don't strip it unless there is rust or flaking. I just season it again like it was new and go from there.

Why has no one stated the apparently not so obvious:

self cleaning oven = incinerator

What? Did you think a little man came out and cleaned in there while it was on self cleaning?

It basically incinerates everything in the oven, so if it's going to incinerate a spill, it's going to incinerate your seasoning.
