IOs

What do you guys have for interossious access? I learned with the little blue ones that you manually twist in (Jam Shedi, I think?), and have watched those and BIG used.

I recently used EZ-IO, and was pleased with its speed and ease of opperation. Just curious what else is out there, and what y'all think about what you use.

We use the EZ-IO, and it is sweet!

We use those blue twist in ones here. Only for pedi use under the age of 5 IIRC. I haven't had to use one yet, thank god.

Our MD is looking at the gun one as a possible replacement.

IO options

1.The EZ IO. Approved for Pedi and Adult use ( with the appropriate needle). seems to be the favored with serivces in my area. I have use it one time, and been around for a couple others who used it. It worked well and was truly easy. I am not to hot on the humeral placement, proximal and distal tibia seem pretty easy. Draw back is it ain't cheap at about $100 each use.

2.The Pyng Device/Sternal IO. For adults only. I think it is a POS. Used it multiple times while working as a flight nurse/medic. Success rate for our 7 base aircraft system was only about 65%. Advantage is it could be used when others couln't due to extremity trauma.

3.The B.I.G. Bone injection Gun. Haven't used them , but we just got them where I work ground now. Other services report mediocre success. I hear they have a pedi one now as well.

4.The good Old Jam****i Needle ( AKA , the blue manual ones we all learned on). Work well in kids and acutally can be used on adults.

I/O is a great tool when used appropriately. I believe these are all the options.

I teach Paramedic now and I let them "play"/Learn with each one.

Good Luck,

DAN

I learned with the blue twisty ones in school, but my department has the EZ IO for both Ped's and Adults and it's just so easy to use and works every time.

B.I.G both adult and pedi. They work well but you have to TRAIN with them or you will inject it into your hand. One of my medics did that and it looked like it hurt! We couldn't stop laughing long enough to help him...

Thanks for the feedback. I guess my first impression of the EZ-IO is normal.

We still have the manual blue IO needles but keep trying for the EZ IO. The local flight program has them, so I've seen them used. Looks pretty fast and easy! Also have seen the video where the doc does one on a conscious patient and its rated as being less painful than a regular IV. We keep fighting the good fight for them.
