coast guard foot locker?

All
I was at an estate sale and bought a few items. One was a sturdy wooden chest. As I was cleaning it I realized it may have history. On the bottom is stamped U S C G. Inside were papers lining the bottom. The date of the paper was Dec 30, 1957. From Escanaba Mi. The chest if 28" x 14" x 13.5"
It reminds me of a footlocker like I had in the Navy, only smaller.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this item or a direction to do a touch of research?

Thanks
