Should we help cut back the racially charged comments?

Ok, I'm not saying that we ought to go nuts with this, or that we need to be too strict here. This is just a general thing--but a thing that has been getting worse and worse as the Presidential campaign continues. And in this campaign season we are going to go nuts if we allow every political thread or even regular (hijacked) threads that mention politics to be reduced to the lame racially charged comments that reflect no thought or substance. I would like moderators to simply be willing curb some of the worst offenses on here.

I'm also not suggesting race is unimportant or should not be discussed. But there is a difference between being thoughtful and being immature.

Here are my reasons why I support this:

1. The comments go nowhere and do not help to inform a discussion in any way. They do not convince anyone of anything. All they can do is put people down, create a mob, or inflame others.

2. We have an unbelievably diverse community here-- a place where people regularly discuss things they both agree and disagree on. This is the beauty of the forum. When when we abandon discretion and promote immaturity or shortcut to name calling and race baiting, it attacks the quality of what has been built here. Make a point with facts and you will be respected by your peers. It's a simple formula. At times, we ought to protect this. We are better than the base racial bating.

3. This is a huge forum, and we have a lot of readers. I catch hits to this forum googling and researching all the time. I think that encouraging maturity will increase our respect among gunners and anti-gunners alike.

I love this site. It's well run and it's a good community. I have given money (and I'd say quite a bit) to this site and I will continue to do so in the future. I'd like to see us as respected as possible.

Last: I do not want this to be a fight or argument. And NO, I'm not an Obama supporter, but that should have nothing to do with it. I don't think Reagan or Warren Buffet would do this either--and they ARE the guys I support. Let's just take the vote and get the pulse. I don't know of a different way to bring this up with owners, mods, admins, and users in a general way. If there is a better way, I'd be happy to transition to that. I will not be responding to comments posted here. PM me if you have any comments specifically for me on this issue.

Haven't seen it. Not supporting Obama is not racism. Not voting in your poll.

I've seen it here a few times.

If your mind/vocabulary is so limited you have to use racial epithets, you should not be posting on GT.

You can hate someone right to the bone, I mean really hate them to the point their name/likeness and followers give you a migraine on the spot!!

It still should have nothing to do with race and everything to do with ability, character, background and the lies they spew forth.

I think it should be a place to say whatever you feel....minus personal attacks on other members.....

On a fourm that I am on....it always gets heated with the top of immagration. I believe it to be an important topic concerning our future. But there is always one or two that take offense, and throw out the racist card.

The beautiful thing about this country, is we have the right to say what we think, even if it is stupid!

And stupid has a way of outting itself....

It's just my .02 cents,

Rick

Expressing one's opinion has become a one way street in our society.

As I see it, we have a choice between political correctness or freedom of speech. I can not see how we can have both at the same time.

I have seen a few examples of blatant racism in some threads. It was generally made know that NO ONE appreciated the comments. I defy ANYONE to show me ONE thread or ONE post where what was generally accepted as an insulting racial epitaph against a minority was used, and NOT promptly deleted by a mod, and a warning or ban issued.

I have seen MANY more than a few examples when expressing an honest opinion that was contrary to an opinion of another member immediately labeled as a "racist" comment, and an ensuing argument got the thread locked. I have seen quite a few where pointing out a documented fact the reflected unfavorably to a race was labeled "racist".

Our mods do one hell of a job controlling this place. Eric has set for rules (and has proved beyond a doubt he will employ the "ban hammer" to enforce them) among which are prohibitions against racist comments. Follow those and the situation will not get out of hand.

IMO, although I KNOW you did not in any way intend this, this poll amounts to "THE MODS AND ADMINS ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB. SHOULD THEY START?"

YES OR NO.

Sorry bro, I can't vote in the poll either.

Zoyter2,

A rare reply from me here on this thread. I in no way am implying that "the mods and admins are not doing their job.." I have an immense amount of respect for Eric and the people he uses to administrate this site. However, as Eric has suggested many times, we are not to fill the forums with whatever it is we want and just let the mods walk around cleaning up after us. It is expected that responsible, mature members will govern themselves to a large extent so that the mods' job should be relatively easy. Part of the problem on the site recently, with other sorts of content, is that users do not self regulate themselves enough and are causing the mods and admins to dedicate inordinate time to a task that they should not need to.

As to opinions of what constitutes such violations, yours is heard here.

Howdy,

Gee, thius one is kinda like a wife/spouse in politics.

George and Laura Bush. Laura Bush stayed in the background and she should be left alone by the media, the other side etc. Hillary Clinton wanted to be in the center stage, the spotlight, etc., so she's fair game.

Same thing applies to Obama. He made race an issue so it's fair game when dealing w/ him as far as race goes.

Most obama supporters only support him because of his race. He has NO accomplishments to speak of. He is very liberal. He has ties with known racists. He has ties with islam. The man who got him started in politics is a domestic terrorists. His wife is racist. He is ashamed of being part white. And he would like to change America into a socialist country.

+1,
When you speak the truth, and people can't handle it, the PC morons shout racist. Just to try and stifle what is true. PC has run amuck in America. For me, I will never fall into the PC trap, no matter who I offend. If ya can't handle the truth, tuff.

It's too subjective for a vote. Who decides what specific comment or statement crosses the line? What one person may think is racist another may not. Many times we view a comment as racist until it's reversed... then it's OK. Just askin.

racism is everywhere. IMO the problem is that sometimes people dont realize they're saying something that others might feel is racist. however, sometimes people here know exactly what they're saying. the world is a very diverse place full of people from different backgrounds: socially, economically, ect. but if you think racism on GT is isolated just to threads about the election then maybe you should explore GT a little more.

I think that if a place is offered that allows free speech, say whatever you want. Its all an opinion.

As far as the "racist" question, He is 6.25% AA. I am also amazed that any reference to AA is met with "your racist, be open minded, etc etc" yet the lib/dem's comments about women and Palin are "ok" in their minds...One Way street, to a very bad place

I honestly dont think racist rhetoric appears that much on GT. Thats what I like about it. We have alot of conservatives aboard here and a few liberals and thought we may disagree on some policy, we all like Glocks and its a fun place to come and discuss things. GT is a great place indeed. I think we keep it in the road pretty much.
