The Road, Cormac McCarthy

The Road, Cormac McCarthy
Just finished this book, ironically I was on a road trip vacation and this book offered the starkest and darkest of contrasts to my little visit to the Magic Kingdom.
Hard to put down, this tale of survival day by day of a father and son on the road in a post apocalyptic landscape "carrying the fire".
The Road is also set to be released as a film Nov 26th staring
Viggo Mortensen, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Kodi McPhee, Robert Duvall.

I read a somewhat similar book many years ago called,
Earth Abides by George R. Stewart which was very interesting as well and deals with different themes. I may have to find it again for another go.

I really enjoyed "Earth Abides". I was able to get a newer edition on Amazon. I found it far more engaging than "The Road"

Earth Abides was a really good book, I was thinking about the struggles they faced in that book vs the Road today. The Road was a bleaker scenario overall with the characters facing long dark times to come due to the utter devastation they were surrounded with, the father son relationship is really the key in that novel.
Earth Abides explored possible futures for the fate of humanity, after a pandemic disease basically wipes out the bulk of humanity.I found it very interesting as I live in the bay area so the landmarks are quite familiar. They also go across the country and back exploring looking for survivors. The struggle of technology vs regression as a society.
A very engaging read indeed

Looking forward to the movie, but I couldn't read more than 4 pages at a time without stopping.

The writer's style just annoys me.

Cormac's books are dark. They explore man's "dark side & inner soul". Try reading "Blood Meridian" which details the nightmarish world where Indians are being murdered for scalps on the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850's.

The Border Trilogy books are the best: "All the Pretty Horses", "The Crossing" and "Cities of the Plain". Tale of two cowboys in New Mexico. Probably some of the best usage of the English language in this country.

The "Road" is dark as well and a very good read.
