As much as I don't like to remember it, my birthday just came and went and I'm now 28 years old. Not something I like to remember.
Anyhow, my S.O. knows about my watch obsession and the good kid she is decided to buy me an Orient (she knows I've got a thing for'em). Anyhow, she's apparently got excellent taste because she got me an awesome, beautiful Orient Kingmaster Automatic--the very same Orient Kingmaster Automatic that I bought last year after seeing it in the display case, thus rekindling my compulsive watch-buying craze. She had no idea I owned it because--aside from the fact that I'm wearing a different watch every time I meet her--I normally wear my Kingmaster with my work clothes, and she usually only sees me on weekends.
So yeah...now I got two of the same watch.
Anyway, I told her about the goof and she's bent on remedying the situation, so we're going back to the retailer this weekend and I'm having her pick out a new one. It goes without saying that I can sway her in any direction I want, so here are a couple of other options I'm looking at.
Regardless of the fact that I'm paying the difference, I'd like to keep it in the same price range so as not to hurt any feelings. That means about $300.
Here are some of the candidates:
1) Orient Kingmaster Explorer
I figured since I've already bought one blatant Rolex knock-off, I may as well get another. I actually dismissed this watch completely when I first saw it a couple years back, but I'm starting to appreciate its looks these days. Good looks, a tad bit small for my tastes and mineral crystal...but what do you expect for $250?
Also comes in black, and black/red.
2) Seiko Alpinist
I never really got what all the hype over this watch was about, but so many folks backstateside are screaming for them (and paying through the ass from Seiya and Higuchi) that I figured I may as well get one just to 1) say I have it, and 2) thumb my nose after paying $150 less than those mail-order suckers! This one can be had for about $300...in Japan, anyway.
3) Orient Star (who knows what they call this one).
I saw it on the shelf, and there's also a red one. Sorta reminds me of the Hamilton, but for a third of the price. Don't really like it or want it, as there's no screw-in crown, it's the usual non-hacking/non-winding and the glass is mineral. For four bills Orient will have to do better than that.
Any other ideas? There's a host of Seiko Automatics I could get for well under $400, as well as the Citizen Promasters...although I've steered clear of them for the same reason as the above mentioned Orient.
All things considered, I'm probably gonna go with that white Orient Explorer knockoff, as I know my girl really wanted to get me an Orient. That, and I don't yet have a white dive watch (not many to be found, no?), I actually kinda like the ripoff aspect of it, and it'd be a nice beater to wear with my lighter color collared shirts and v-neck merino sweaters come winter time.
I'm such an f'ing member of the Film Actor's Guild, sometimes.
Any opinions on this one? I'm picking it up on Saturday, most likely.
