Laptops with better than 1280x800 displays?
I've noticed that virtually all laptops sold in the retail stores have crappy 1280x800 resolution displays. Any suggestions on models that have better displays? I miss the days when screen real estate meant something. It seems now if it is "wide screen," that is all that matters. Give me a 1600x1200 or 1440x1050 old school lappy any day over this current junk.
Enough complaining... I'd like to find a laptop less than a $1000 with a better display, if it exists.

Oh yeah, I'm not looking for a Mac. Nice stuff, just not my style. I'd be using Linux anyway.

You can get a Dell Vostro 1510 with 1440x900 or 1920 x 1200 screens.
I have the previous version Vostro 1500 with a 1680x1050 TruLife screen, and I'm happy with it.

There are some HP's like the 17" model that you can get higher resolution if you customize it from HP when ordering it. I had a sony years ago that had 1250x1050 or something like that and it was nice.

+1 on that. I have the Vostro 1500 with 1440x900 and the NVidia 8600M GT graphics card. It runs all the games I have tried (Call of Duty 4, Oblivion etc) without a problem. The image quality is exceptional. I got a screaming deal on mine last January. T7500 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB Ram, 160 GB HD, NVidia GPU, BlueTooth plus a spare battery for $844 including delivery and tax.
My wife liked it so much I ended up getting her the exact same laptop.
They have both been flawless so far. The only thing we use our tower PC for is as a print server.

BTW everybody, I bought a Lenovo SL500 Thinkpad with a 1680x1050 screen and NVidea 9300M graphics chipset. Thanks for all the advice. The screen is very nice.

I have found that generally speaking, when people want a laptop they want something that is portable. Screen dimensions above 1280x800 usually necessitate a bigger-sized laptop, to the point where it becomes unwieldy for most people to carry around, hence the larger laptops being marketed as "desktop replacements." Like you I also felt constrained by my 1280 screen (the compiz cube in Linux helped with that a little), so I eventually got a 1680x1050 monitor and a desktop, and now all is well
