Foster help: large bump on the head.

Ok, this is strange. We have a 5-month-old foster who came in yesterday. She had a large bump on top of her head that was soft to the touch. The person who had her before us said that it came and went once, and that they thought it was a hematoma from rough play with two older dogs.

It was large and firm last night, and this morning it is completely gone.

She has a vet appointment tomorrow morning, I just wondered if anyone has seen anything like this, and if you know if it could be anything more serious. Furthermore, if the "coming-and-going" nature of the bump sounds like anything with which you are familiar.

Thanks for your help!

Soft lumps usually mean fluid-filled. These can be hematomas (bleeding under the skin), but those don't go away suddenly. However, seromas (very similar sort of thing) can go away. Both are commonly caused by trauma.

This could also be a cyst in the skin. Depending on the origin of the cyst, those may come and go abruptly as well. Abscesses are always a possibility too.

If the lump is present at the vets, they can aspirate (pull some fluid out) and tell you a lot more about what's going on.

Many thanks...I considered PMing you directly, but didn't feel right doing that without paying for an office visit!

Yeah, well, free advice is usually worth what you paid for it! Actually, I don't check PM's all that often, so posting is usually the best option anyway.

Let us know about the lump.

Never heard of them coming and going like that, will be interesting to see what the vet thinks when he sees her.

Yep, that's the bizarre part - but we're still bump free as of now!

Here's a picture (she's on the right):

I agree. One of our dogs began getting a lump that got a bit bigger and worried us. It was fluid that had to be drained by our vet. Most likely it was caused from rough housing and hitting the pool table. She was fine the entire time, but looked a bit dumb with a huge knot.

Maybe it was just some excess ear tucked up inside that hadn't yet popped out.
