Arm and a leg for ammo

My wife bought me a new toy yesterday, a .308 Remington 700P. The gun has excellent fit and finish, is well balanced, and looks awesome. This rifle is reputed to do less than 1 MOA right out of the box with match quality ammo. I want to find out, so I bought several boxes of S & B 168 grain match ammo.

The problem is that the Sellier and Bellot match ammo costs 24.96 for a box of 20. The price is painful, but not as painful as the Federal Gold Match which goes for 36 dollars.

I also got some Remington Corelok hunting ammo for 17 dollars for a box of 20. At this rate, I won't be shooting this rifle much. It hurts knowing that it is costing me over a dollar every time I squeeze the trigger. I'll just zero in the scope and then clean the rifle. This one is destined to be a safe queen, only because I could hardly afford to shoot it.

How do you rate a Mossberg 100ATR Night Train? It looks attractive for $429.00.

Ammo is so expensive now. I bought two-140 round battlepacks of South African 7.62x51 ammo last month for $90.00. The rest of the stock was sold out the next day.

I have no experience with a Mossberg 100ATR. The link is for some comments I found in the 'net.

If on a budget, I would solidly recommend a Savage 10FP. Coupled with a good scope, it can compete with any Remington 700.

Talking about ammo flying off the shelves, the good citizens of my city are buying all the "assault" weapons and ammo they could. The election results got some people scared.

Thanks for the link, wtf jack. It's a mixed bag of reactions concerning the 100 ATR. But what bothers me most is the frequency of extractor failures and in one instance, the locking lugs failed and injured the shooter.

I was seriously looking at the Night Train. Might as well look at the Stevens 200 and the Weatherby Vanguard Combo Package if the budget and the wife permit.

Before you go for a Stevens or Vanguard, check out the Savage 10FP.

if you want the cheaper way, start with Lee, their prices are resonable esp their dies. Or get the rcbs rockchucker kit., its double the price of lee. scan the forums for used 308 brass, fc , rp or military is good. if you wont be competing and want some good bullets, try the nosler factory seconds bullets. its the same as the regular nosler bullets but with blemishes w/c does not affect accuracy or the wideners milspec bullets. your 700p is a tactical rifle not a hunting rifle so stick on 168 or 175 gr fmjbt bullets. on the powder, i did not try a lot. i stick with varget bcoz it gives me great results on all my rifles. RE15 is good too, never tried it on my 308, only on my ARs. i hope this helps

That Rock Chucker kit looks like a winner. Midway USA got it for less than 260 dollars.

I just checked the rifles you both suggested at www.wholesalesports.com, and they're much more expensive than the ones being sold in the US (as they have always been). I'll keep looking for those rifles; there might be good deals out there.

Please educate me on the advantages of Redding T7 over the other brands like RCBS and Lee. Which powder and primer should I get for .308's?

Redding T7 is more robust and solidly built compared to the turret press made by RCBS and Lee. T7 can accommodate 7 dies (it's like having 7 single stage press).

The advantage of a turret press compared to a single stage :
Faster, because you do not have to remove and change the die each step.
Your settings will not change, thus more consistent result.

As for the powder, primer, bullet choice. Try this link.

I took the Remington 700P to the 100 yard range today to zero the scope. The scope by the way is a 6X-18X power Nikon Buckmasters (proudly made in the Philippines). It is an excellent scope; very bright and holds zero very well.

I used the middle target to adjust the elevation, the upper and lower left target to set the windage. The upper and lower right targets were the "proof" shots. Pretty good for a hundred yard.

Hi Jack

What ammo did you use?

Have you tried Federal 168 grain BTHP Gold Medal match ammo? Im pretty sure you will be happy.

I was using Sellier and Bellot 168 grain match ammo, 25 dollars for a box of 20. The Federal Gold Match is 36 dollars for a box of 20, too expensive for me. I was trying to use the least number of rounds to zero the scope. My son and I are going back next week and try out the 200 and 300 yard ranges.

I am going to try my hand at reloading later this year.

That is a good measure of precision, groups of 5 shots or more I think is a better measure.

I am going for cold bore shots, so one good shot is enough to satisfy me. A cold bore shot is a better measure of the rifle's performance as a sniper's rifle. After all, one good shot is all it should take.
