For Washington State that'd be title 9 right here

I would advise -against- legal advice from police officers (they don't usually deal with upstanding firearms owners) or folks you find in gun shops (or for that matter forums but I'm not a lawyer so it's not like that advice is backed with malpractice insurance or anything. -Boyd
