New to wireless service. Have a new Sony VAIO. House it 2100 sq ft, two story. Upgrading to cable internet.

Need suggestions for a wireless router.

I would get the Belkin g Nano(nx3). Is cheaper than Linksys and gives you pretty good range. If you look at the box on the back, it tells you the range graphically. Make sure to get the one with the highest range ($79.00 I think).Most all wireless routers nowdays, gives you the same security features, so it does not matter what brand you buy. What matters is the range; mine is the one step lower than the one I recomended to you and pretty much I can use it all over the house and my backyard and front yard. I would also suggest to set it up on the top floor as high as you can and centered in relation to your floor plan where it gives you an even signal troughout the entire house.

be informed, and buy locally so you can easily return it if unsuitable.

I've had bad experiences with Belkin & NetGear, and recommend D-Link or LinkSys, but ymmv, get what works for you. My strong recommendation is stick to the $50<>100$ range, as something in that price bracket works, so why pay hundreds more..

and bottom feeding can leave an odd taste in your mouth.

It works great. I like Linksys stuff better though, the Firewall on a Linksys is quite a bit more configurable.. The Netgear can be configured, but not to the extent the Linksys could.

The key, is placement of the router. I took the router, and put it on my kitchen counter Wired one computer that is in my basement, and one that is upstairs. Then I have my laptop on the main floor that runs off the wireless connection. It was really quite simple.

We have both a Linksys WRT110 and a Linksys WRT54G at work. Both work well, even inside our tin buildings.
