do the iron sights work through the eotech, or are they essentially disabled? I just bought a CAR-15 with the rail in place of the rear carry handle. The EOtech will work as ordered, or do I need to buy something to mount it higher than the front sight?

No. EO blocks irons with this set up. They are still sighted in but I'd have to take off the EOTech (I'd just remove the whole mount= 1 screw). In another pic I've got the EO on a forearm rail and there it's co-witness with the sights.
